He also played the role of the murderous minister in "Murder Ordained," a couple of years before his role in "thirtysomething."

When the show originally aired I found him very unattractive and didn't really believe that Ellen would have been with him. I also found the plot-line of Ellen being self-destructive in relationships to be taken a little too far...it's been a while since I watched it, but what I remember is that Ellen had an ulcer or something and somehow her physical ailment was tied up into the plot of their relationship. It all came across as very bleak and depressing to me.
