Episode 1: Why couldn't Joe Gardner just keep his mouth shut?

I watched the mini-series on youtube and now starting the tv series.

So cringe and embarrassing how he acted with the grieving wife and family of his employee who passed.

First, at the funeral, he couldn't even say, "I'm sorry for your loss"?

The wife had to approach him and introduce the family. He couldn't act more disinterested. Says, "Bye"' after, no condolences. We all saw how he reacted when his son told him the wife would like for him to come to the funeral.

Then he whines about his disinterest to his new ladyfriend. But that's not enough.

He goes to the grieving widow's house to confess to her his disinterest in her husband all the years he was his employee.

This woman was very gracious to him. I just couldn't believe he felt he had to tell her how he little he knew about his employee. Can you imagine anyone who has lost a spouse being told this crap?

At least at the end he said, "If you need anything...." and trailed off from there.

I don't know if the writers presumed the audience would think this was some deep enlightenment but I found it appalling for him to express his indifferent feelings to a woman in grief. I actually thought when he realized to his ladyfriend that he never took the time to know this guy he was coming over to somehow make amends and comfort his wife and express sympathy. Instead, he horrifyingly admitted to her how he hardly knew him and it was bothering him how all day how he didn't. It was all about him!

Any reasonable and thoughtful person would just keep their mouth shut about how little a dead person meant to him to their grieving loved ones. Really.

I remember seeing this show back in the day. I don't remember a lot of it but this was terrible.

A lot of the family is whacked. One of his daughters finished divorcing her second husband that day in court and later that night they're back in bed together and I can't figure out why.
