Available?

Has this show ever been repeated or released on vhs / dvd? Are any copies available at all (legal or not)? I'd heard that there was some dispute over songs used, something to do with copyright. ANY info would be much appreciated.

I contacted the bbc in scotland last year regarding vhs availability and was told that it had never been released on vhs. also there were no imminent plans to show the series again.:(

It hasn't been repeated for years - I have a video of the first 3 episodes if that's any help, I'd love the rest ! I know someone who worked on it and it won't be released as they didn't get copyright for the music. There was a story in one of the papers earlier this year that the BBC were releasing it on DVD - I contacted them and they said it wasn't true.

Hope that's some help !

I've looked through the paperback book that accompanied the series and wracked my brains about the songs featured. There is nowt new here (other series and movies have similar content - e.g. "Slab Boys") so copyright is unlikely to be the reason it's not on DVD/Video release. The most likely reason is that some of the actors (most big names now) DON'T want it issued for whatever reasons. Great shame thgough!

The truth is that one member of the cast refused to sign the video agreement, there was never any problems with music copyright

I have the series on DVD (transferred from video recordings) It's not perfect but highly watchable quality.

I'll swap (not selling copies) with anyone who has any other rare stuff, if not I'll swap for some blank DVD's to cover my time and expenses.

p.s. I also have the vinyl soundtrack album transferred to CD if anyone wants that.

Thanks.
Baz.

What are you looking for as a swap? Do you mean a DVD or a video? Does it matter what region? What kind? Give me a clue. What country are you in? I am very interested in your DVD.
My machine can use any region. Please reply a.s.a.p. bookzell

I contacted the BBC earlier this year about the possibility of the series being released on VHS/DVD, and after being pushed from pillar to post going from department to department and distribution office to distribution office; I was finally given an answer:

It will never be released because of copyright problems

I’m not saying that what someone on here said about a cast member refusing to sign an agreement isn’t true, but that’s the official word from the BBC.

Also, I just want to add something about a copy of the series on DVD. Again, I’m not saying it was the poster who mentioned he has it, but I bought a copy on eBay last February and the quality was absolutely terrible. So be warned before you buy!

"Tutti Frutti" was shown in its entirety at the Glasgow Film Theatre around summer 2000, iirc. Thanks for the link above - I always thought it was Byrne himself who did not want the series released on DVD ... intriguing ...

I've got the Ebay DVD as well - and the quality is pretty cr*p. It's got the whole series on one DVD (so you can imagine how digitised it has to be) and then, of course, it's recorded off of 1987/8 video tapes.

I taped it at the time, when I was about 13, but on Betamax (!) and they went the way of the dinosaurs years ago.

I'm sure it was repeated once, at least on BBC Scotland, but that would have still been late 1980s.

Maybe, just maybe, the documentary on next Sunday night will inspire the Beeb to repeat it, if not DVD it, at least. A lot of shows I thought were lost forever have been released on DVD this year (GBH, How Do You Want Me, etc etc) And a lot of older Scottish TV is appearing on DVD for the first time too (Scotch & Wry, the Vital Spark - and City Lights has been available for years).

Fingers cross.

Yup, got the ebay dvd as well, not great quality but still watchable...just!

From my understanding it was a music licensing/copyright issue that has stopped it being re-shown/issued on dvd.

If you get the chance get to the stage version. it is coming to the Kings in Glasgow, April 2006. I went to the Edinburgh show and it was really great, the cast were great and the script was just as good! You can be assured that i'll be there again in April :-)

Cheers,
Al

I have a copy of the series - it is split into two discs - so I presume it is not the one from eBay? - I wouldn't say quality is 100% - but between 85-95% and very watchable

reply

Good new is that BBC are to repeat the series in June 2007.

Only "drawbac" is that it will be on one of their less popular digital channels, which the actors are not pleased about. They reckon it would be a huge success on one of the major channels....wait to see what happens

The glad news appeared in the letters page of the BBC's "Radio Times", in the form of a reply from the director of BBC4 to a reader's question as to when it would be shown again. I'm sorry I can't give the exact date, but it was about a month, six weeks ago. There didn't appear to be any doubt that the series would be retransmitted very shortly, and definitely on BBC4, not BBC1 or 2. But this wouldn't preclude a later showing on one of the main channels. I am an ex BBC staffer, so if I can worm any further details I'll post again on this site.

i would suggest that the 'copyright' problems are as a result of 'clearance' issues regarding the songs used in the show.

i.e. whoevere owns the 'performance' rights to a song, (usually whoever owns the publishing), can say 'yea' or 'nay', or more commonly, 'yea, if you pay me a big, fat, royalty fee'

i believe it's generally referred to as 'getting clearance' - hence songs may appear in the show, but are not permitted in the video/dvd of the show to be sold after, because of contraxtual agreements

additionallly, shows may ask for permission to use a certain song/recording of a song, and they may be refused point blank

Indeed. And even where we do see long-awaited DVD releases, any cuts are more likely to be music-related than anything else, so I'm told. One example that springs to mind is the absence of Nigel 'Neil' Planer* singing The Sound of Silence in The Young Ones. Just too pricey.

Still, the aforementioned pirate copy of Tutti Frutti looks like it might do the trick.

*Telly Connections No. 257: Two years prior to fellow 'Comic Stripper' Coltrane's appearance in Tutti Frutti Planer starred in the sitcom Roll Over Beethoven: http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/articles/r/rolloverbeethove_12990026 78.shtml
