the music

The DVD's need the original music. How hard is it to get the copyrights for songs you aleady had permission to use? Still I bought all three seasons. Best episode was the siege episode in season 1.

reply

After a while, the permission runs out. Also, a lot of times, the rights of songs change hands, or people want ridiculous amounts of money for them. That being said, I agree with you, entirely. They need the original music. And I bought them all, too. lol

I'm with you, Ranger Zulu. I taped every episode of TOD as it originally ran but I was thrilled to learn it was finally being released on disc as a boxed set, thinking that I could finally un-ass my collection of tired VHS casettes. However I was royally pissed when I dropped the first disc into my machine only to learn that all the great bands from the '60s had been replaced by some cheeze-dicks who were probably still popping zits on a bathroom mirror when I was busy "in-country".

NUMBAH FAWKEENG TIEN, GEE-AYE......NO RYE!

Bring back the vintage tunage! It'd be a bargain to me, even at twice the price.

I'm a new fan of the series, so I have no idea how the score used to be...
But I quite like the music, especially the main theme.

I loved Tour Of Duty, but the reason why I never bought the DVD is because they axed the period music.

reply

Its not that the rights ran out, but that the rights only covered certain media types (aka Beta & VHS, and mebbe laserdisc). As CD's & DVD's didn't exist as video storage media when the rights were negotiated, they were not included...

That meant when it went to DVD, they would have had to re-negotiate all the rights yet again... and it would have cost them too much, or so they say. Its happened to a lot of series, sadly...

I bought the 3-season 'footlocker' set (its cardboard, boohyah) and was rather put out that they'd re-dubbed all the music, even to the extent of loosing audio tracks in the process in some eps.

If I could find a bootleg set with the original music, I'd buy it, THATS how PO'd I am about the changed music.

WhiteWolf McBride,
- was 2 years old in '67, but I remember all the tunage, as my babysitters used to play it. Still love it!

reply

There is no need to buy bootleg DVDS.

The Region 2 (UK/Europe) and Region 4 (Australia/NZ/South America)have all the episodes with the original soundtrack, as they originally aired in 1987-1990. All you need is a multi-region DVD player or very simply de-coding your DVD player to be multi-region (those generally easy instructions can be found on the Internet).

Both sets have the exact same content. However, the Region 4 complete box set comes in an actual tin box case. The Region 2 box set comes in a bulky cardboard box. They are both available online such as at Amazon.com or Fishpond.com.

The soundtrack definitely plays a big role in this series, bringing it into the late 1960s but also setting the right mood in certain scenes taking you into the minds of the characters. There were some powerful moments set entirely by the music (especially in episodes 1.1-1.10 and 3.13 for me personally).

You need to get the complete series with the soundtrack - you won't regret it.

Precisely!
I got the uncut UK version with original music from Amazon.co.uk and it plays just fine on my Oppo BDP with region free modification.

Sounds like bad porno background music to me. But I still LOVE the show.

reply

LOL!! you rule bro! :)

Cheers!

well if I remember the music was only used on the first air in syndication they did not use it they had the end theme like on the dvds funny thing is it was repeated here in the uk about a year back on fx and they used paint it black and all the music so I put them on dvd just so I have them

reply

I had every episode from when they originally aired on Beta tapes. Unfortunately my ex husband took all the tapes and there were hundreds of them. ToD, Magnum PI, some other shows, and a lot of movies from cable and from when cable wasn't even out. When HBO really meant Home Box Office.

I think there was another one, too, that had a type of box and you subscribed to it and it was like HBO. On Tv or something like that.

Man, I am still ticked off at that ex of mine!!

I LOVE Tour Of Duty and I also bought all 3 seasons...I used to watch it when the reruns played on TNT!!! I would LOVE to know if there's anyway to find the opening music...not Paint it Black, but the realy cool sounding music...

reply

all I remember is 'WEEEEE GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE, IF IT'S THE LAST THING WE EVER DOOOOOOO' I'm only 25 now, can't believe I remember that show, or even that episode for that matter.

reply

Do they still have "Paint it Black" as the opening at least?

reply

No, and that's what kills it for me!

(Actually, I bought the DVDs for the 1st season, but I never liked either the second or third season and wouldn't have bought them even with the original music.)

reply

the only song that they kept was we got to get out of this place from season 1 the episode about the uso people who got shot down

reply

It is amazing how different the original music makes the show, completely changes the atmosphere in some scenes.

Take for example, S01E02 - Notes from the Underground, where Baker is chasing the wild pig that had stolen his food.

In the redubbed music, it sounds ridiculous when the Beach Boys - Wipeout should actually be playing and adds comedic effect to the scene!

reply

Oh! It is sad to hear they did not keep the original music! :(

I like tea

The R2 from the UK has the original soundtrack.
