where the rich guy tells Picard it wasn't about the money but to controls 1 destiny.. Picards tells hil that was a illusion..rich guys says I'm here aren't I

A very important scene just cut out.

I'm as pro-capitalist as anyone is, but I don't see that censuring that scene was anything more than cutting time for more commercial slots - which is a capitalistic move...

Yes, the rich guy was there but was an anachronism - which was the point they were trying to make. The whole character was actually anti-capitalist as written. The man based everything on acquired wealth while the more "enlightened" of those of the 24th century do things for reasons other than capital gain. Star Trek has always based the future economics on altruism as opposed to advancing on building wealth, which of course fueled the failed philosophies of Socialism and Communism.

Yes, it's disgusting, but the reason we have advanced technology, medicines, comforts, etc. is because someone figured out how to build a better mousetrap for money. It's against human nature to do things for purely altruistic reasons.

What has never worked in human history apparently works in the 24th century though.

Socialism has worked pretty damn well in Europe, and has afforded investment and advances in education, health, science and technology - not that I believe you can tell the difference between social democracy and Stalinism.

It sounds like you envision advanced heath care as a result of capitalism, despite the fact that the US health care system is inferior even to 3rd world nations, and doctors are being requested from abroad to deal with a pandemic.
It is in fact government interest and investment that steers better technological and scientific outcomes. An unregulated capitalist free-for-all does not do that on its own. Capitalism does not automatically equal innovation.

I can take my own country of Australia as a good example...
Australia horribly lacks in innovation and denies climate change - thanks to the tireless efforts of a capitalist-media-propaganda effort by Murdoch and unregulated donors.

As a result, innovative techologies and new industries are virtually locked out of the market; thanks to conservatives in the pockets of fuel and coal lobbies - keeping us backwards.
A similar situation existed in Apartheid South Africa.

Anyway, it would be ludricous to believe that the future envisioned in Star Trek is a testament to hyper capitalism and individualism; that of which is currently leading the US to ruin.

In fact, that is the status quo of the Ferengi, but at least they were not hungry for war and conquest as well.

Commercial slots on the BBC?

The BBC HAS no commercials, except for their own stuff - what IS that guy talking about?

I remember this episode...

I have given thought on a plausible explanation as to why 💰 doesn't seem to matter in the Star Trek world, remembering exchange with
Picard and the rich businessman.

Given that most females regard high status men with money more attractive, I was baffled on how this change came about in the 24th century. Perhaps the ability of making anything with the replicator, just by asking for it had something to do with it.

But the preference for high status men with waterfront property, probably remains even in the 24th century.

reply

the economics of trek was always a joke. The writers of DS9 often made fun of it.
Water front property...who gets that nice beach house? Someone like Nog who works in waste mangment or a good Doctor?
There is only so much land on earth.

reply

didn't the various series pretty much back off the no money thing?

reply

When the did the writers of DS9 make fun of it? They were largely the same writers as TNG.

From what I can recall: the only references to profit throughout the remainder of the original Star Trek franchise was towards currencies still used by alien cultures; such as the Ferengi and their latinum.

reply

The best one is where Jake wanted to get the willy mays baseball card. A big scene with Nog. Jake explaing why humabs don't use money, with Nog replying.."If you don't need money then you don't need my money"

Such a funny topic title to me. When I'm on the internet, it's usually the BBC that's getting censored.

Few will understand this.

reply

I think every guy older than 10 will get it.

reply

Haha. In this day and age, you're probably right.
