I'm tired of this show getting a free pass

There are a lot of phenomenally bad episodes of this show, even outside of the terrible first season. The show gets a free pass like it's the very best of all Star Trek. It's really quite silly and laughable at times, made worse by the fact that it took itself way too seriously a lot of the time. At least the original series had kind of a campy feel to it. There must be a dozen different episodes of this show where one cast member is the only one who can see reality for what it is while time and space goes haywire around them and the rest of the cast is oblivious to it. I'm also sick and tired of seeing the cast trying to explain behavior to Data, while trying to spare his feelings that he doesn't even have. The show wasn't anywhere near as insightful or philosophical as it was made out to be. It can be fun but only because of its own unintentional ridiculousness.

All valid points, but will always be one of my favourite shows.

I do admit that I enjoy watching it, but it just makes me mad how it got so critically acclaimed undeservedly.

DAMMIT BOBBY!

ALL THAT WITHSTANDING...ITS STILL A GREAT SHOW THAT WILL STAY IN PEOPLES MINDS AND ON THEIR TVS WELL INTO THE FUTURE.

It will live on through CBS All Access and also Netflix and other streaming channels. But I will argue that it will never have the cultural impact that the original series had. They keep going back to the well on that one, especially if it involves the character of Spock. Most people can't name Geordi La Forge, Data or Lieutenant Worf, but Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Uhura, Scotty, and McCoy are still remembered by even casual fans.

I don't get the dislike for the first season, it's not that bad. Sure, the uniforms are skin tight, but that's all part of the fashion of 2364, lol.

reply

The first season was re-used scripts for the ST Phase II series that never got off the ground.

reply

More like zombified re-used ideas not entire scripts Roddenberry was still in control which translates in Trek production as a formula for disaster.

There is no such thing as a good first season in Trek except in TOS.

reply

But it has Q!

reply

The first season was terribly overacted. Still a good show. And we talk about 30 years later.

No one will be talking about “Picard” in 30 years.

While I do think fans gush too much over the show, I think you're selling it seriously short. There are a lot of bum episodes, like you say, but for every bummer, there are two or three with real insight and nuance to them. The Best of Both Worlds arc alone (ending, of course, not with BoBW 2, but with Family) justifies the show as high quality sci-fi.

Compared to the dog shit CBS is pooping out these days, this series is Star Trek gold.

lol

It doesn't get a free pass, it's open to criticism just like everything else. The fans can see the flaws, I'm one of them fans, we just don't care due to everything else being so good.
