N00b Here! When does Data...

Hello all!

Long story short, I was born in 1987, was about 6 months old when TNG premiered. My mom raised us on sci-fi, including the Star Trek franchise, but as you can imagine, I was too young to remember specifics. I was only 7 when TNG was cancelled. I started watching it for myself a couple of weeks or so ago thanks to Netflix. I just started TNG's season 4.

Data has developed into my favorite. (I have such a crush on him/Spiner [at his age back then and today] right now.) I don't think I have to go into all the reasons why as I've come to understand he's one of the more popular characters. 

I was wondering when Data gets his emotion chip? Is it during the series? If not, which film does he obtain it? I tried Googling but I'm getting confusing info and also trying to avoid spoilers. Speaking of the films, do I need to finish the series in order for the films (or at least the first two) to make sense?

Thanks! 

I THINK the emotion chip first shows up in the season 4 episode "Brothers" but Data doesn't actually take possession of it at that time.
The chip is stolen by Datas brother, Lore.

It makes its next appearance in the season 7 episode Descent...Which is when Data finally does take possession of it.

I don't think that Data is shown using the chip on a regular basis until the movies.

correct.

Destroying an empire to win a war is no victory and ending a battle to save an empire is no defeat

There were actually 2 different emotion chips. One he was given by Soong in Brothers that Lore also had in Descent, and the one in the movie Generations. He got the one from Lore in the second part of Descent but he crushed it up and snorted it because he heard the emotions would hit him quicker that way. Then he constructed a new one which appeared in Generations, and that is why it looked radically different than the emotion chip we saw in the series.

When I read this I bristled over your use of the word cancelled, but I suppose since most of the cast was under contract for an 8th season it's understandable. However, with DS9 underway and Voyager soon to come I wouldn't exactly say TNG was cancelled. Not to mention the cast transitioned directly from the series to the movies. I realize that it's a matter of semantics, but I believe that ended would be more appropriate than cancelled.

I hope we don't scare you away. Some of the people here take their Star Trek very seriously. By the way you wouldn't have to watch the whole series before watching the first two movies, but if you have the time I would recommend it. I hope you enjoy!

Haha thanks. I'm actually not active on IMDb like I used to be like a decade ago, to be honest, so y'all probably won't see me around too much. If I do come here, I'm usually on the Criminal Minds board, lol.

Thanks for the warm welcome. 

TNG was NOT cancelled, nor was DS9 nor VOY. They all came to natural ends and can each boast a rich SEVEN seasons.

Cancelled, my a$$.

Why are you here if you haven't seen the movie yet?

reply

Based on ratings, DS9 and VOY probably shouldn't have lasted that long.

If the new execs that took control of UPN in 2000/1(and who were for a large part responsible for the failure of ENT)had been in office during the time DS9 and VOY aired would have probably pulled the plug out of DS9 and VOY after 3 seasons.

reply

You are probably correct, Nex.
