Fencing

I recently watched some real-life fencing on YouTube and it looked nothing at all like Jean Luc and Guinan going at it in I, Borg.

The reality version is super fast and, to me, incomprehensible. Here is what I saw: En garde, one chases the other one away, everyone cheers.

I feel stupid.

It depends on what style you watched on YouTube.
Epee, Foil or Saber.
It sounds like you watched a saber match on YouTube.😀
Saber moves much faster than both Foil and Epee.

Also the show was done in the 80's. Styles varied then too.

See if you can pull up Foil fencing from the 80's on YouTube.
Then get a match more recent.

Then pull up a recent epee event and compare it to a recent saber event.

In the show they seem to be doing a sort of amalgam or the three styles.
Possibly. I'd have to watch it again to explain what they are doing specifically.
But Picard is using a saber but calls it a foil. Possibly that is an 80's thing though.

I think you're right - I must have been watching sabre before.

Just watched some foil and epee.

Foil seems most like what JLP and Guinan were doing, with lots of thrusts and parries, but it's still a hell of a lot faster, and I still couldn't really tell what was going on except by watching their masks flash.

Epee was slower. It seemed like a lot of staring down and head games, followed by a very quick burst of action that was over quickly.

Interesting sport. There is apparently a lot of nuance that I'm too dumb to pick up on (just like most everything else in life). Seems like a great cardio workout.

Nak could work with you, FKA. She's a pro.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Barbara Hale. You were great in Perry Mason. RIP William Christopher.

Stage and screen fencing differs from real fencing. Its purpose is to appear graceful and exciting to an audience, rather than to actually wound or score points.
