Different cultures within one roof

Think one reason I loved this show was due to its diverse nature. They had the Indian (or mixed girl), African American (Tisha Campbell), The Blonde, The Tomboy, and the baby girl. Ironically people didn't try to judge or question storylines like this too much in the 80's.

We had shows back then like 'Different Strokes' and 'Webster' where you had a White family adopting black children. So for this show to do it was not out of the norm. Ironically I do wonder how people would react with a show like this in todays time.

I'd be fine with a show of diversity today. I loved that the 6 girls yes I'm counting Nina even though she was Just in one episode ,were diverse and under one roof and called each other sisters I even took guesses at what ethnic background Mickey ,Diane, patty, and Nina could be we knew what Marva and rose were.

That's what I like about '80s shows and diversity - it was a nice mix with plots and comedy that appealed to everyone. Then came the '90s and suddenly everyone stayed in their own culture and values like Martin, Thea, Livin' Single, and later on with George Lopez, One on One, etc. It's much better when all cultures are on one show together.

Kimiko Gelman is actually Asian. Kimiko is a Japanese name, so I'd say she's of Japanese decent.

Don't recall them saying Rose was Asian/Japanese. Probably assumed Indian due to an episode (can't recall been yrs). Just same with me not calling out the blonde by a specific race because at time I didn't recall em being specific with her or the baby girl (which was my choice of title).

Episode 2 of season 1 "High Society" she says her mother was a "Nisei" (pronounced nee-say) an American born Japanese. Therefore we can assume that Rose is also Japanese. Nowhere in the series do they say she is Indian.

I thought that Rose said that she was 1/2 Japanese and 1/2 Caucasian. I think that she said that her father was a soldier.

In one of the first episodes (3?) debutant ball; she mentions she is American born Japanese... conceived in Japaneese intern camp by one of the guards.

I think Patty was part Hispanic.
