Axel's cane Episode7

I just watched this series again, and it struck me that in the scene where Axel meets Mary to help her find Magnus, he's not using his cane, and looks remarkably healthy, compared to the scene where he finds Magnus at the cricket game.

This troubled me. Was he deceiving Magnus all along? Was he using the cane to inspire Magnus' sympathy? He was using the cane when he and Magnus first met. Hopefully it was not a production goof.

Anyone have any insight?

Axel aged very well considering he was at death's door in Berne. I think his elevated status simply gave him access to good medical care.

This was my interpretation as well. I think SurlyRed has summed it up very well.
