Why was it cancelled?

I just been watching the extra feature on the dvd, which looks back at the show with Greg Evigan & Staci Keanan. Greg says that they pulled in around 28-30 million viewers. So why was it cancelled?

Like many shows that get cancelled a flawed Nielsen Ratings system was to blame since this show never did higher than 20th which was the debut season and it dropped in the last two seasons. The Nielsen Ratings system is basically like a poll/survey of a limited number of people and then based on those few they use the average for the whole country. Of course the flaw with that is one group of people can hate a show and cause the rating to be low while another different group can love the show and be watching it but not be part of the Nielsen Ratings system. Especially when you consider that the boxes they use the record the data are only in 5,000 houses out of aroung 113 million houses in the US that have a TV. So 5,000 people that have the boxes could hate the show and the other 113,999,995 people could love the show but it would get a bad Nielsen Rating. And for whatever reason networks actually listen to that garbage.

Statistics and sampling is well understood; especially for static information for viewership. They only sample about 2-3K people for Presidential race polling. The only problems with sampling is when there are unknowns are poisoned data like how many people say they don't watch TV (but really do) or when they have to predict things like creating samples of likely voters.

A lot of shows don't make it past 20 and still go on.

what the hell was that ??

That's not why it was cancelled. It was cancelled for the same reason just the ten of us was.... They were both high rated shows but the new network president at the time wanted to change the programming, make it dark more edgier like fox and NBC.... So they got the axe. Next season after their new line up bombed they realized what a mistake they made and then fired the network president and went back to family programming and that's when TGIF boomed.... So it had nothing to do with it's ratings

They were going to give Paul reiser a show but at that point he had shot the pilot for mad about you on a different network..... And that's also why Stacy Kennan was cast in step by step.... As a sort of sorry we cancelled your popular show..... And because my two dads was so popular at the time they knew her staring in a new show with Suzanne sommers and Patrick Duffy would draw in viewers.....

What is more amazing is that even though the show got the axe, at least they did it with enough notice so that they could write a send off. I mean how many shows get cancelled with only 3 seasons actually get a proper send off?

reply

Mad About You and My To Dads were both on NBC you idiot.

reply

Thanks for pointing that out. When I read the previous post it made no sense because neither one of them was on ABC which is where the TGIF was the tagline.

If this aired on ABC, then how come in two episodes from this 10 episode DVD I own, does it have a logo that flashes 'In Stereo Where Available' & in the middle of the stereo headphones graphic was the NBC Peacock logo? 

reply

It was on NBC.

reply

That's because the boob who said it was in a different network is an idiot.

reply

he made a mistake...big deal.

reply

Because it was dogsh!t.

It looked shaky after the first season. It only got a half season, a mid season winter replacement at that, for the other 2 seasons.

reply

Because it was stupid
