Why do so many fans hate the three part England episode (Season 6)?

It seems to always be up there among the most disliked episodes in the series along with the backdoor pilots ("Top of the Heap", "Enemies", "Radio Free Trumaine"), any of the Seven episodes.

One observation that I stumbled upon online is that the "England Show" signified the point in which MWC became too goofy for its own good. And it was hit and miss by that point on, and more miss as it went on.

reply

Because it's all kinds of stupid. Definitely the moment the show jumped the shark.

reply

Spin-off episodes were the worst.

reply

Yes, they were awful, but they can be ignored. This three-parter was the beginning of a change in the show.

reply

Well I totally disagree. Married With Children had been getting goofier every season that went by, but the England Show was the best part of the entire Season 6 in my opinion.

Maybe it was this episode that made faithful fans finally realize that Married was going off the rails a bit, but it wasn't the cause.

The Bundys were no more idiotic in the England Show than they were in any other show that year, but the English cast was freaking outstanding. The story was pretty good as well.

The backdoor pilots are unwatchable though.

So you love bad TV, there's no shame. Just don't be pretentious and claim it's good TV. Just because you eat from the trash doesn't make trash the optimal source of high-quality gourmet meals.

Ah, thanks for that. Nice to get some good advice from people who shit gold.

those england episode were some of my favorites

reply

Because those episodes weren't funny.

reply

TMC-4,

because it was bad.

It was out of place a true Jump The Shark moment. It also seemed like a desperate attempt at spin offs or to breathe new life into the show.

I would add that a trip to England seems a bit outside the Bundy universe. I don't remember how they ended up there but that would have been impossible in his financial situation. A trip that he saved up for that falls through before it happens would be more believable (yes I'm sure there was some insane circumstances that got them there (like the Simpsons getting an all expense paid trip for the family to Australia so Bart could be tried for a phone call....equally stupid even for a cartoon).

reply

Yeah for sure and I thought I wrote that but obviously I'm tired lol.

In short a Witch 339 years ago placed a spell on a town in England to live in darkness until all the Bundy clan or their blood line are killed. So the town invites them over so they can kill Al and Bud. As they are the remaining descendants.

So yes it becomes even more unlikely and out of the usual modern Urban environment that they live in. Just a little too stupid and forced. I had forgotten all about the reasons behind it and was wondering if they won the trip which would be far more plausible. Then you just get the usual fish out of water mishaps that happens when you have shows do this sort of thing.

I've never been a fan of it really.

reply

Oh My gawsh!!! I was thinking they might have won a sweepstakes or something. That is INSANE loL. They should have at least made it a dream or a campfire story. This must have been around the same time Kelly became some sort of scientist and briefly turned Bud into a can of beans? I think the writers just stopped caring by then.

reply

Yeah when I looked it up due to your question it reminded me even more why I hated it so much! Even the shoe store sending Al over there to learn about some new brand of shoes coming out would have been more plausible.

I am not sure if I managed to sit through the eps. I didn't think they were well done.

reply

Yeah, I remember years into the series I saw a rerun of the first episode and was surprised at how down to earth and funny it was. And Al and Peg actually cared for each other.

reply

I just watched these episodes again and they're not that bad. Now, the Seven episodes? Those SUCKED and imo, is when the show jumped the shark.

reply
