When did the jokes between Marcy and Al become more aggressive?

I watched a few earlier episodes with Steve and I've noticed that Marcy and Al get along pretty nicely for example in the Barbecue episode in the Season 4 premiere, Al wasn't normally disgusted by the sight of Marcy and actually enjoyed her pressence when they were eating at the end of the episode.

When did they start hating the sight of each other? Was it in the Jefferson Era?

You're hitting on one of my few beefs with this show. Al went from being a lovable loser and terribly unlucky man to just being an old crank who was always snapping at everyone. If you watch a season one episode, then a season 8 or 9 episode, you'll see exactly what I mean.

that's what happens when someone unhappy, they start to snap at people. Also it was his progression as a character.. If you watch any show, the character won't be the same in Season 1 as they are in Season 8 or 9.. every show has to have some type of character development or else the show will cease to exist..

I would say after Steve left Marcy, Al & Marcy got increasingly more harsh with each other. It cracked me up when Al called Marcy a chicken.

I recall when Al told Marcie her future kids would starve to death if she tried to breast feed them, due to her small breasts. Remember when snarky Marcie told him he could cash his check at the local lemonade stand! Their zingers had me cracking up sometimes!

Yep, we've suddenly gone from the later episodes to very early ones on Channel 76 and I see exactly what you mean.

MWC made a significant change starting with the 5th season.

finally the first season has started to rerun again, and i think i just saw the first example of al and marcy not getting along, marcy walks by and sees al's pay check and automatically laughs and lets out "is that what you make?" before getting an oops expression, al replies "adding on a bit of weight, aren't you, marcy...". i understand the series was considered quite raw back in 1987, so it's funny how innocent it is today, and still funnier, what a terrible progress. from the very start the series is having a go at the french, and notice how they seemed to experiment putting a co worker with al in the last few seasons of the series before finally settling on griff, where here in the first season al had a co worker which they dropped after just a few episodes, also it's funny how the boat in the basement is mentioned as their whole reason for buying the house so al could keep it in the basement... well, i don't ever remember hearing the boat mentioned during the following ten years the series went on.

on street walkin between lucy and madeleine,
rockin at centre hips of favorite darlins,
forms blended in till i got slippery and buttered up,
turned into blob,
they spooned me up and put me in a cup,
as fall back to their trick of pass time fun.

probably after season 5, or 6.

the banter became more and more cringy.
still funny.. but more mean and tasteless.

Pretty much when he realized she looked like a chiken.

The show had some funny Steve episodes, but it really found its footing when Jefferson came along. The dynamic between Al and Marcy changed, but the audience ate it up.

My wife and I are rewatching the series and I love the dynamic of Al and Marcy. The rivalry began the season before Steve left and took off from there. Some look at All as a crank, but this was certainly a bigger improvement on Marcy's character. Before this, she was just a goodie two shoes. She really came into her own once they built the rivalry.
