Final episode question

Are we to assume because that woman had a letter thanking her for care when ill that he partook intimate relations with her in how she had proceeded? That this was why the letter was destroyed? People not told? That's how it was implied to me. Any thoughts?

From the letter we know that she never saw Morse or followed up with him about seeing her after he was discharged so that is why he resorted to writing her a letter. In the letter he writes that he would rather be sick and nursed by her then be healthy and not see her again. The letter was removed from the evidence box because it tainted Morse's ability to be part of the investigation. How could Morse investigate the case when his letter was part of the evidence found at the crime scene? You could also add that one of their chief inspectors was " involved" with the victim of a clearly sensational crime .

Strange ultimately destroyed the letter in the hospital as an act of kindness/ privacy / dignity to Morse .
