Why Was Lewis Still Evil if He Broke His Deal with the Devil?

One thing I never understood is why a) if Uncle Lewis broke his deal, why the Devil could still get his soul?, and b) whenever the protagonists encounter Lewis, he's always unrepentantly trying to bring some new evil mischief about. In Faust myths, there's always the sense that the "Faust" character could get out of it if he just recanted. Mephistopheles even tries to convince Faustus to do this in the Christopher Marlowe play.

I guess Lewis breaking the pact was just a way to explain why he died, but it always bugged me that he broke the pact, for what I would guess was some moral reconsideration, but then he just goes on being evil.

I was always of the impression that it was like Peter Pettigrew in Harry Potter. Lewis had a momentary crisis of conscience when he refused to sell the doll to the little girl (Sarah Polley). That doesn't really make him any less evil. Ergo the devil still had a claim on his soul and collected.

As for why he was portrayed as evil in later episodes. He was trying to get back to earth but couldn't until he got rid of the others.

I guess that makes sense, but it always seemed strange to me that they never referred to that again in later episodes. You would think Lewis would at least complain about getting taken to Hell for his moment of remorse, even if he knew he'd eventually go to Hell anyway. I also thought it would have been interesting to show him as a more conflicted character, occasionally showing that smidgen of conscience again, even if he was mostly evil.
