'Daughter...'

I love the way Nigel Planer addresses people like that. Is it a commonly used expression or did he make it up for the show? I've never heard it anywhere else.

What about Eddie and Richie using shortened words every few lines, was this a hot thing to do back in the 80's or something?

Also "priz" for prison and "the papes", which I still use when I'm going to pay my paper bill.

The 'daughter' thing is Polari. It's a sort of theatrical slang used by gays back in the 60s when honosexuality was still illegal. The characters of Julian and Sandy (played by Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick on Round the Horne used it a lot). Theatrical gays would often refer to other homosexuals as 'she' or 'her'. I think the 'daughter' thing is an extention of that. Ralph Filthy is an old agent, been in the biz for years and has probably picked it up as a term of indearment towards Ritchie. I don't think Fiilthy is supposed to be gay, though. It also could be a reference to the fact that Ritchie (like his Bottom character) is like the woman in a marriage. In Bottom, when talking to Spudgun and Dave Hedgehog, Eddie often refered to Ritchie as 'she'.

The abreviation of words ('priz'...'papes'...'trub' etc) is purely the invention of Ben Elton. He would abreviate words in his stand up, the most famous being 'Mrs Thatch'.
