Why would the show need a Pilot?

The Pilot for the show aired as the second episode of season 1. But didn't they already have a Pilot? The season 3 finale of The Cosby Show.

Some series have more than one pilot as they keep retooling it to market it to a network to air.

I noticed that with shows in the 70s, 80s, and 90s that will do a show based on the spin off. For instance, not sure how many have seen The Nanny in Season 2 there is an episode where they did a pilot for the spin off of The Nanny. Before The Parkers became a TV show Moesha had an preview episode of The Parkers and The Parkers became a big hit.

In the Cosby Show season three finale the Huxtables along with the grandparents went to Hillman to visit Denise and to attend teh retirement of the school president and Clair sang at her presentation.

That sort of set up the series pilot.
