Pilot was haaaawt

I've had a crush on her even since I saw this show.

Looks so much better in a ponytail, too.

I nearly exploded when I saw her in Armegaddon.

Why did she have to die?

having a woman character die for the primary reason to further develop a male character's development is an all too common cliche in comics, tv shows and movies.

For example Green Lantern's girlfriend is murdered, hacked to pieces and put into a refrigerator. In Lethal Weapon 2 Martin's love interest also gets killed off...

Here's a list of female comic characters that have met a brutal, untimely death:

Pilot's death may have been easily avoided by having someone return to base with her, sending Hawk on his own back to base while the others made repairs or of course if she chose not to go back in to blow up the base manually.

However I can't really fault the writers in this case because Jessica Steen did have reservations about the violent nature of the show, the whole Mattel connection and was worried if she stayed on longer she'd be typecast.

To be honest it would have been nice if out of the 5 Power team members, 2 were female as opposed to just Pilot.
