Why is the Prince Regent always eating in almost every scene?

Or rather nibbling because Hugh Laurie knows that he's got to be coherent when he's delivering his lines so he's sort of half eating and half talking. And as the scene changes, he moves on to a different food item with every new conversation.

And why is Baldrick always stuffing the same chicken?

Although I must say, the quality of food from this series is much more preferable to the run-over-by-a-van rat, liquorice slug & mud coffee from Blackadder Goes Forth. :)

It's just emphasizing the already accepted historical fact that Prince George (later King George IV) was a notorious glutton. Not to mention a playboy, philanderer and profligate spender.

So the portrayal was pretty accurate?

Just google "prince regent cartoon" on image search and you'll find several examples of contemporary caricatures by Rowlandson et al. depicting George IV as a dissipated glutton. Here is my favorite:

This reminds me of Delboy in OFAH. We see him eating more times than any other character in the show. Be it takeaways, sandwiches, pizza, egg and chips, etc.
