What Woo did that Peckinpah didn't do


The final shootout in The Wild Bunch should have taken place at night, during a big banquet in the Mexican army courtyard. Sam Peckinpah moved it to the afternoon, easier for him to capture the whole sequence on camera. John Woo, being also heavily influenced by Peckinpah among other directors, decided to raise the bar in ABT and went on to shoot the gunfight finale in the dark.

You have to put into account those 17 years of evolution in film stock and fast lenses

I actually see it completely the other way around. I find it quite lazy when they film action scènes in the dark, 'cause it's easier for the audience to miss things. In daylight you spot things better.

A matter of opinion I guess.
