Scene I remembered most

Near the end of the movie, under the high school bleachers. Wisdom sees a half eaten sandwich, picks it up and takes a bite out of it.

Memories are wierd.

reply

Yeah, why would he do that? And what kind of sandwich was it, peanut butter?

reply

The weird thing is that I think of the same scene when thinking of this movie. Jesus.

"Oh Look, a deli meat!"

reply

I think it was symbolic of a last meal before being executed, is how i took it

Marty. Y'know what we got here? MotherF&%kin' Charlie Bronson. Mr. Majestyk

reply

Yeah, just watching it again, made me think that. It is like his last meal, knowing he is going to die.

reply

This IS weird because I also remember the same scene.
I want to give a description for why I think this is, but I don't think
it would do it justice. its just too vague, yet still there on the "tip of my mind".
Another part that sticks with me is when the cops all rise up over the bleachers on the home side and start walking down and the helicopter is over head.
I think John see's the world crumbling at that moment.
Thats what I saw.
very surreal.

i think that scene was meant to show the hero's defiance , and a futile effort to show the police, and the rest of the world, that he doesn't really care, what's in store for him; But actually, the scene doesn't achieve the purpose, and appears more on the pathetic side.

why do you think the scene was pathetic? I don't follow that view.

reply

i think it looks more pathetic, because the actor fails to evoke a tragic response from the viewers by taking frustrated bites at the sandwich, the action is quite out of place, and creates an impression ,that he is either weird, wacky ,lost his mind due to shock.. so on and so forth;
He has failed to react convincingly at the sudden and tragic end of his girl friend, as if he knows that it's all an illusion or some thing.

Queenofpentacles, coming back to this discussion now after a few years I was thinking the reasons John appears that way with the sandwich and with his girlfriend is really quite simply because he is scared, and in all reality, a dumb kid that wasnt ready for what it all turned into. He never expected to kill anyone in actuality I personally don't think, and certainly not for Karen to get caught up in it all and die. After he lost her, the harsh reality of the situation I believe came crashing in very hard onto him.
After he left Karen in the classroom I believe John had decided already that he was giving up, one way or the other.
When he threw his bullets away, I'm not totally sure he had yet decided wether or not he was turning himself in or going to go out by police suicide. Seemed like a spur of the moment decision.

The funny thing, is there's a scene very similar to this in "The Town" with Ben Affleck.

I wonder if this movie was the inspiration behind it.

reply

Dude! That's funny, I totally latched onto that scene the minute I saw it and thought the same exact thing! haha. When he takes a drink of that cup on the side walk before he faces the "firing squad".. Sharp eye brother. That's ill man. hahaha you thought of the same thing. crazy.

These responses from semiloaf's initial question back in 2006 are all rather interesting, but I honestly thought he took the sandwich only because he was starving and hadn't had anything to eat in days.

DAMN, isn't that nuts!! Semiloaf asked this question in 2006, and as I think about that I'm like, "Oh, that was just a year or two ago."

Umm... no, it was 10! That's just mindboggling that 2006 was 10 years ago. And here's something that's even more scary and shocking to think about. What's more mind-blowing, the fact that 1996 was 20 years ago or that 2036 is only 20 years from now!

Ehhh? Ehhhhh...? That got ya thinking. :)
