I worked on this movie!

I had the pleasure of working on this film! It was one of my first jobs abroad and had a great time working in the South of France for a year or so. Of course the film is absolute rubbish and is only saved by Prince's great soundtrack. I remeber him as a nice guy..quite distant from the crew, but he threw a few parties for us and seemed OK.

Very cool...any other tidbits that you remember? What were you in charge of?

reply

It was my first big job, and I was only 18..I was the runner, so basically doing all the rubbish jobs that nobody else wanted to do and make tea and coffee etc. Don't remember too much of it as it was a long time ago, however I do remember that the original director Mary Lambert didn't last too long as Prince had his own ideas about the film. The other thing was meeting a very young Kristin Scott Thomas, it was her first major role and she was really nice. Most of the crew were American or French, however myself and the accounts department were all British, we used to go to Nice airport most days to buy the British newspapers and Kristin often used to come upstairs to have a read of the Sun!! I also remeber her not looking foward to the scene in which she had to kiss Prince! We were teasing her a bit one day and when we reminded her that she had to kiss him the next day she said 'yuuukk!' That was pretty funny!

absolutely hilarious, share some more stories with us..

reply

Best not to! I don't want to end up in court!

I think that was fairly unprofessional of Thomas considering that she was a nobody in major films and Prince was the reason she was gettting that opportunity.

There are some redeeming qualities of the film. The cinematography is excellent - it is a beautiful film. I have been to the South of France and I think the films captures the beauty in black and white. It was funny. Even more some to those who got the cultural and racial subtext. I always felt ti was judged too harshly - mainly because people wanted Purple Rain 2 and didnt get it and it was in black and white.

I wouldn't take it too seriously! She was only having a private joke between a couple of fellow crew members! She was very professional and you could tell even then that she was going to be huge talent...which I think she's proved in her subsequent career. Also you have to remember that at the time she was very young, still in her teens.

how cool that u worked on this movie!!

Cool story. However. Being a huge Prince fan, I'd have to beg to differ with your recollection of Scott Thomas and her age at the time. Back in those days, I made it a point to catch everything that Prince was involved on screen, record, tape and later CDS. I was only 17 when I saw this in the theaters. Scott Thomas is 9 years older than I am so she could not have been in her teens. During the principal photography of this film.

reply

Yep..you must be right. I guess in her early 20's then? It was a while ago!
The story of them sleeping together is absolutely NOT true. I don't think she was too keen on him and she didn't fancy him at all I seem to remember.

reply

I'm sure your memory is a lot better than mine! I guess she must of been in her early 20's! Hells Bells it was a while ago! Stil...she was the best thing on that film!

reply

Thomas was 26 when she did this thing (I refuse to call it a movie). It was her first role and she now regrets doing it. She said she only did it because she was fresh out of school and was desperate to do anything so...
Also I doubt VERY much that she was sleeping with Prince considering her completely understandable reaction to just kissing him:)

reply

She has however attended at least once of his concerts in recent years as a special VIP guest. I was there at the time where he tried to get her up on stage to dance so they must be on friendly terms.

reply

Hey--time heals all wounds:)

I believe she didn't want to kiss him after watching the kissing scene. It's horrible. Both mouths tightly closed and very wooden performances. I never did get the appeal of Prince. A lot of the girls I worked with at the time were crazy about him and camped out all night to get tickets to his concerts. I was into Michael Jackson and didn't care for Prince at all. Now that I'm older, I can appreciate some of his songs, but most of his stuff is junk, and I always thought he looked like a female.

Any other memory you could share with us?

To summarize: Kristen Scott Thomas was aghast just having to think about kissing Prince, let alone kissing this vulgar piece of crap. Seeing it was so many years ago, and Prince is still a runt, scum sucking pig, I bet his luck with women in Zero, and his ability to produce healthy babies is also zero. Looks like the music industry and the Prince 'fans' are worshipping a false god.

Considering what a jealous bitter twisted loser you sound like, you may want to keep your opinions to yourself. Prince had more talent than you could ever hope to have in your entire lifetime and just because a ninny such as Kristin Scott Thomas (very overrated actress, I might add) didn't like him means diddly squat. The fact that you felt the need to come on these boards just to trash him says more about you than anything else. And I'm not sure I understand what his producing healthy babies has to do with anything, since many losers breed like rabbits. It is not a talent, by any means, it's mostly dumb luck and genetics. It's like complimenting someone on their good looks; some people are naturally good looking but it's not an accomplishment.
But of course I am one of those "fans" worshipping and now mourning this "false god" - which he was not, he was a man - and I can assure you there are many others who feel the same way. Okay, rant over.

Well said, especially about many losers breeding like rabbits.

It's unfortunate Prince never had healthy children. He gave an interview in which he stated one of the best pieces of advice he got from his father was "don't get a girl pregnant". So he didn't and thus was able to tend to his career. When Prince decided to father a child, he was married to a young woman he truly loved. That all ended tragically as everyone knows.

It's too bad, because Prince is widely regarded as a true genius by all the great musicians of his day. We all know he could play many musical instruments and was a guitar virtuoso as well as a clever songwriter, producer, arranger and could perform long shows for months at a time where he danced like a professional. He was amazing, gifted and an outstanding professional with a peerless work ethic.

The one thing he did not do well was direct "Under the Cherry Moon". Mary Lambert who was originally hired to direct was let go because Prince had many unrealistic ideas that did not make sense if you are trying to make a movie on any kind of budget. He wanted to do a scene where the sun was setting behind him right as he said his lines. Mary pointed out that technically this would be extremely difficult, since once the sun set there could be no second take until the next day. This was obviously before visual effects technology would have made this request easy enough to do. When Mary balked at putting this shot into the script, Prince fired her. He asked the art director to direct the movie, but since she was a close friend of Mary, she declined and also resigned from the project. Thus Prince decided to direct the movie himself. It did not work -- but her tried.

RIP Prince Rogers Nelson
