One of the darkest things about this film.....

A quick perusal of the message boards shows that many people have commented that the movie is way darker than the G1 series, and most kids films today, often for the brutal deaths dealt out to Starscream, Ironhide et al, and the emotional trauma of losing Optimus Prime to boot. But the darkest, most nihilistic death of all? - Kranix. Not only was he torn to shreds by a multitude of robot sharks (check out his death scream as the scene fades out for chills), but as he himself stated only moments earlier, he is the last survivor of his entire race. Instead of a tiny sliver of hope to give kids that life will persevere in the face of even the most terrible odds, the scriptwriters decided to teach them that no matter how far you run, no matter how hard you try, eventually you and everyone you know will die, and the world around you will be spectacularly indifferent to your demise (apart from Hotrod and Kup's half minute interaction with him, we're never shown that any of the other Autobots or Decepticons are even aware of Lithone's prior existence, nevermind it's spectacular destruction. A whole planet full of life wiped out, and almost all of the main characters we're rooting for are blissfully oblivious to their fate.
There's one for the detractors who say this film is just a glorified toy commercial.......

Krannix is over looked. He barely escapes Unicron only to end up imprisoned by the Quintessons. His last day or so of life was very turtorous. Thinks now I'm feeling bad for Krannix.

Yep, this is the only series / toy line that I hang on to from my childhood. The G1 cartoon series was great, but nothing in that prepared us for a film opening with such global destruction - they even take pains to show us a couple of robot children running by, laughing, without a care in the world. Hey kids! - those children are dead three minutes later, along with everyone they've ever known.
Ironhide was such a staple of the series, possibly second only to Prime in importance in the show and - BOOM! - head blown to pieces at close range by a genuinely evil, merciless bad guy. No light hearted comedy moments in this show (I'm looking at you Skeletor). Try and imagine the desperation that was going through Ironhide's mind just before it was blasted right out of his head - he's desperately trying to do anything he can to stop the Decepticons, probably knows he's mortally wounded, fully expecting that the bad guys are going to manage a surprise attack on his dear friends, kill loads of them - and Ironhide will be feeling the blame squarely on his shoulders, and that'll be his last thought before he dies.
Kranix manages the near impossible task of escaping Unicron, just to torn to shreds and eaten just a short time later, Daniel nearly has to deal with his dad fu*king melting in front of him.....
Can't think a similar movie aimed at kids would ever be allowed to be this dark in 2016, and it's all the better for it.

Holy Sh*t! I was coming on here to say the same thing and already saw people were talking about it. Every time I watch this movie, I think damn how could they do Ironhide like that and the rest of them too. 30 years since I was in the theater as a young buck and it still irks me.

By the way the music in this movie if FN phenomenal.

I thought exactly the same watching it today. Cold as hell.

The whole movie I LOVED (still love it) it's just a cartoon. The death & destruction really didn't bother me. The ONLY thing that bothered me was Ironhide biting the dust. I'm Southern and Ironhide had a Southern accent. His toy was the first I ever got... so only his death really had an impact for me. Leader die all the time. So Prime dying was expected sad but expected (love the music at that point). Yet the show showed us Transformers didn't die easily. While I was sad concerning cartoon characters dying. Hello people it is NOT real! That's what I don't understand why everyone takes cartoon violence so... literal... it is NOT REAL!!!

Death is an adult theme. Transformers was prepared to break the rules and deal with death. It is a great film. Unfortunately we may never see an animation film of its class again. The film industry don't like taking risks. A pity because 30 years on people are still talking about how awesome transformers the movie is.

At that time I wasn't too fazed by the opening act of Unicron devouring an entire planet, and its inhabitants. No emotional investment, I guess.

The big shock for me was not Brawn, but Prowl: shot in the face, and silently screaming as he dies in agony. Ratchet and Ironhide, shot to pieces including clear penetration of their chests (ouch!). And then finally the moment Arcee drags the cold, dead corpse of Wheeljack to rest.

I don't think I had any tears left for OP, and am glad they cut the original death sequence for Ultra Magnus!

If it makes you feel any better, there's an alternate universe comic where Kranix is saved and The Autobots promise to help him keep the culture of Lithone restored or something
