Question about Cougar

Cougar goes to see the skipper (James Tolkan) and turns in his wings. Does that mean he was quitting as a Navy pilot, or was he resigning from the Navy completely? Somehow I don't think he could just walk away from the Navy, having signed up for a certain number of years. Did Cougar take another assignment?

reply

Officers serve differently than Enlisted.

Enlisted serve for a specific term, called an Enlistment. after which they are automatically discharged unless they re-enlist for an additional term.

Officers do not serve for set terms.
They have a mandatory obligated term of service but once that is passed, they continue to serve until they quit, retire, or otherwise become ineligible to serve.

Couger quit, presumably having already served his obligated term of service.

I thought Kooga lost the edge and was holding on too tight, which is why he quit, hana

when you bilge out of 'jets' there's nowhere else you'd wanna go in the Navy, hana

Don't know what the jackass said, but whatever it was, you can ignore the troll claiming he was a Naval Aviator. Or any of his dozen or so sockpuppets that will likely start blowing up the thread.

I paid him no attention. What do you think Cougar did after he quit? Probably being a civilian airline pilot or air traffic controller would be too stressful, although he wouldn't have to worry about MiGs dodging him.

Being a pilot does not qualify one to be an Air Traffic Controller. One career field has nothing to do with the other.

As far as what he did afterwards... Pretty much whatever he chooses to do. The field is wide open and totally outside the scope of the film itself. Personally, its nothing I even remotely considered.

Perhaps he will take to shrimp boat fishing, or something else out at sea.

After nearly getting himself killed in the air, and prior to that, before he joined the Navy, he was stalked and almost killed by a demonic 58' Plymouth Fury....

Well, he'd still have to pass a flight physical for either of those jobs. After flipping out like that in the air, if he was HONEST on his flight physical pre-approved, chances are it'd be 6 months to a year before he'd be allow to fly again. But he'd eventually be able to fly again if he wanted to. But having a bachelor's degree, he'd have the world at his hands. Maybe he could swing a medical retirement, then he'd have a DoD check and rate a VA check. Then he could just chill if he really wanted.

I reckon he would get a really dull job like driving trucks or some other type of job that he would be able to perform. Even if it was just short term to get over losing his edge.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.

I doubt they would make someone fly an expensive and dangerous jet when they felt they couldn't handle it anymore. In reality they might have offered him a desk job but I doubt he would have wanted that.
