Hi All,

In the "Lost that lovin' feeling" scene we see a bunch of different uniforms. First couple of times through I thought "ok, they are non-Navy types (Airforce/Marines/Army - whatever) detached to Top Gun and/or from a base near-by.

Later we see Mav & Goose in the similar uniform.

Now, in my (non-American) service history, our Navy had VERY strict codes on what uniform could be worn in what circumstances, and even down to what time (of day) that uniform could be worn. I don't recall specifically, but I don't think you'd see that spread of uniforms in those circumstances in the Australian Navy. So, I'm interested to know, what's the (simple) version of the white and drab uniform being worn? Was it a goof?

I can understand the first change. If you were in the khakis and had to change to travel, that's one thing, but I can't remember ever having a time when I had to change from that to something else upon arrival.

When were you in? It's been a long time since I was required to travel in uniform, except when in transit to/from Iraq.

Well the first thing is....its a movie, it doesn't necessarily speak to absolute realism. The actual advisors for Top Gun talk about this very element in the special features. They read the script and said "this would never happen" on many occasions. But it worked that way, it would have been way to stiff and documentary like to make it wholly realistic.

The second thing is this movie is circa the mid-80s, culture and protocol change with time. For instance, in the 80s USN 'O-Clubs' aka Officer's Clubs and Enlisted Clubs on base were actually a fairly hip thing depending on the base of course. Fast forward to the 21st Century, the former has become very politically correct and the latter is literally extinct. Even when I was there in the 90s Miramar had a pretty solid reputation for being a place you don't have to go off base in order to have a good time.

Having said that the mix of different uniforms really isn't a goof. Maverick and Goose were wearing USN Officer Summer Whites. This is a Service Uniform, semi-formal to somewhat more formal depending on the occasion. Formerly known as Tropical Whites circa the 80s and back when there was also an option for shorts, Tropical White Long or Tropical White Short. The guys you see wearing tan with ribbons, those are Service Khakis, significantly less formal than Summer Whites. Both would be suitable for the O-Club. You also see many guys in the green/olive drab coveralls with colored turtle necks, these are obviously flight suits. Flight suits are working uniforms. Its questionable whether or not this would be allowed but not out of the question. Same goes for Working Khakis which look very much like the Service Khakis but made of a less comfortable but more durable fabric, using no ribbons and can be short or long sleeved. Those are extinct but like the Flight Suits were a working uniform. Wear of working uniforms and organizational gear is usually restricted to work or on base, always something regulated locally by the base commander and/or the unit commander. Officers, especially then, have a little more lee way with things like that.

My take on the O-Club scene is this, the production most likely did an invite to the base officers for the chance to be extras, and intentionally or unintentionally they got a mixed bag on who showed up. Active pilots in squadrons are gonna be at work in flight suits. Officers on shore duty working desk jobs, are gonna be in Khaki's. As for the Summer Whites, these seem to be limited to the actors on the cast.

I understand it's a movie, and have no problem with dramatic licence, but am ALWAYS interested in other services etiquette.

Call it what you will, but I find the nuances of what is right and wrong in movies interesting. It's not to say 'blah blah got it wrong' (except Michael Bay, but that's coz he's a wanker) more to know what is right.

I'm not even sure what is RIGHT in the Australian Navy, except to say the blue uniform (Aussie equiv to the drab you guys wear) had a definitive time (of the clock) limit. You'd see people mid beer leave the club because it was x o'clock, where the army guys would go on drinking :)

One thing to remember or have another look at, take it for what you will, is the rank of the officers in the club. I see Captains, Commanders and Lt. Commanders everywhere. Compared to the Aussie Regs, the things of which you speak in my experience only apply to JOs or Junior Officers. A Captain worrying about what time it is while having a beer, I don't see it happening. Especially not an Aviator. Having said that I don't see any JOs or Nuggets in Flight Suits in the club scene.

Like I said it's REALLY sad and I don't think you have a sound mind. Get a life and a wife to keep busy but please don't pollute the World by making any children!

Deny all you want, the circumstantial evidence is more than enough. You have now FOUR sock puppet accounts rajesmulan, Novtej_Dil, mulanhana and Ajactor_4. You post using these fake accounts on the same Boards like EastEnders, Coronation Street and Desperate Housewives all at the same time. Your posts from these 4 accounts are all written at the exact time usually based on GMT as you live in the UK. Like I said you have too much time on your hands to keep logging in and out of your sock puppet accounts and setting brand new accounts all the time.

I was a Marine pilot, then later switched the navy and joined the teams. After I got busted for punching out my CO, I took up a desk job at JAG in Washington to see out my 20.

So this account rajeshmulan as well as Daddy_Tej and Ajactor_4 have all posted in the same threads on the same English TV Show Soaps like EastEnders and Coronation Street in past 24 hours  What happened to your other Sock Puppet account Dr_Ali_Tomar? You haven't posted from that account for 6 day now?! I think that account is specifically set up to try and piss off CGSailor and the threads he posts in, carry on hana 
