The ultimate 'jumped the shark' movie

Not only was this movie just awful, it can be traced as the "jumped the shark" moment of 3 CAREERS ! Look at Chevy Chase, Martin Short and Steve Martin on imdb, all of their best work was before this movie and they have not done anything good since. Your thoughts ?

reply

Wasn't that obvious ? Pay attention!

reply

Actually Steve Martin has done several good films since. Roxanne,Planes Trains and Automobiles, LA Story , Father of the Bride 1 & 2 (with Martin Short) jump to mind.
Chevy Chase has done little of note besides his Vacation sequels.

Where Steve Martin jumped the shark was with his new Pink Panther films!!!!!
Leave Peter Seller's legacy alone, you won't compare well.

Steve Martin DEFINITELY jumped the shark with Bringing Down the House, no question.

Martin Short was always funny, but only good in certain situations. Never should have been the crux of a comedic role for more than a couple minutes (i.e. Clifford and Jiminy Glick aren't as funny as him in smaller doses).

I almost agree with you about chevy Chase, except for the fact that this is one of the funniest movies ever made.

reply

Would you people stop saying Jumped The Shark. You heard that on T.V and now you think you can say it anytime. Its a reference to Fonzie on happy days jumping a shark and thats when it got too corny to continue.

How does a great movie like 3amigos catch a shark jump reference???

All these men are still working today and doing very well.

you people sound like idiots using industry terms that your repeating from the making of or behind the scenes of something.

ULTIMATE??? your the ultimate moron and couldn't wait to repeat that stupid shark jump line. get over it.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

"you people sound like idiots using industry terms that your repeating from the making of or behind the scenes of something."

Someone that doesn't capitalize the first word of the sentence, and then proceeds to use 'your' instead of 'you're', when they mean to say 'you're', can also be said to 'sound' (not that there's SOUND here) like an idiot.

I am just saying..

Have you not seen Innerspace?

reply

dont forget about Clifford, that movie is great!

reply

First of all, that's not what 'jumping the shark' means.

Secondly, I guess you never saw Innerspace. Martin Short is funny in that movie 100% of the time he's on screen. And he's on the screen quite a lot, being the main character.

reply

Don't forget Bowfinger, and I thought he was pretty good in Shopgirl as well though that's not really a comedy.

"Not only was this movie just awful, it can be traced as the "jumped the shark" moment of 3 CAREERS !"

?

The movie was great (for what it was supposed to be) , plus as far as i can remember it really boosted at least bothe the careers of Martin (for sure, for super-stardom) and Short . Chase i think was already known and the film didnt draw any more attention to his persona or got him contracts to super-hit films in the future.
In general i think they all 3 have to thank their lucky star for being in that film.

Steve Martin's had a fine career since Three Amingo's. Chevy, well...Martin, eh, well. Those two are little more shaky. As for this movie, Gotta say the suits really pop on an HD screen. The weird Zorro/Porter Wagoner look is very cool...lol

dannygarcey - could not have said it better myself. This movie is a classic and is way underrated.

Check out how many of its classic scenes have made it to YouTube - and the favourable comments on them there. A lot of people, who weren't aware of it, have said they want to see it now.

wow, no way! almost any steve martin movie is funny. there's a couple that i didn't like, but only a couple. loved roxanne, both father of the brides, little shop of horrors, housesitter, mixed nuts, and anytime he was on saturday night live. as for chevy chase, i've never thought he was very funny, so this was a good movie in spite of him. i guess he coulda jumped the shark with it. and martin short is funny in almost anything he's in. i liked him in clifford, merlin, alice in wonderland, santa clause 3, any time he was on snl, and when he guest starred on law and order svu. i don't think you can say they jumped the shark as actors.

reply

this movie is a classic in every sense of the word for all 3 actors. Personally i think that anyone that uses the term "jump the shark" has indeed jumped the shark irl.. its just a shame ya actually made it over and didnt fall in

I think all three actors made good films after this. Wasn't INNERSPACE after this? I happen to agree with those that don't like this movie. In fact, as a John Landis fan I think this is a terrible movie with a hugely talented cast dealing with a bad script. But comedy is subjective. Those who loved this film and think it is hilarious? Good for you. I just didn't think so. Doesn't make either side wrong.

this movie is funny as sh*t, and always will be.

"this movie is funny as sh*t, and always will be."

Interesting to see how a brain of a [censored] works.

First of all, you didn't capitalize the beginning of your sentence, signifying you aren't intelligent enough to know basic english grammar.

Secondly, feces (i.e. 'fart humor') is not funny, unless you are four or you suffer from brain damage, or there's something wrong with you.

Thirdly, do movies often CHANGE? Whatever this movie is, it will of course be that as long as the movie exists (which won't be ALWAYS, because that refers to eternity, and no form lasts that long).

It's amazing how stupid people are able to pack so many different mistakes, errors, thoughtlessnesses and expressions of stupidity in a very short sentence. I always admire that.

Steve Martins best work came in '89 IMO with the movie Parenthood. Love that movie and he is perfect in it! It was also nominated for a few oscars. I also love the Father of the Bride movies (which include Martin Short). Housesitter and Roxanne were also fun movies. Clifford is a great Martin Short comedy. I mean what other grown man can play an evil 11 year old boy so well??
As for Chevy Xmas Vacation came in '89 also. Other than that yes his best movies came before this. But that just happens as most actors get older.

Oh yeah also Captain Ron is a great one for Martin Short... I guess it depends on your taste. I happen to love Three Amigos, nice clean fun

Everyone is forgetting 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' (1988) where Steve Martin put in a great performance alongside Michael Caine. That is a classic 80s comedy.

Steve Martin, Three Amigos (1986). Let’s see, after that he had a well received part in Little Shop of Horrors, was in one of John Hughes’ best movies (Planes, Trains, and Automobiles – a Thanksgiving classic), co-wrote and starred in Roxanne (Writers Guild of America, East award), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (not a personal fav but lots of people I respect comidically liked this movie), Parenthood (if not critically acclaimed at least [again] well-received), he wrote and directed L.A. Story (94% on Rotten Tomatoes), acclaimed dramatic turns in Grand Canyon and especially The Spanish Prisoner, wrote and starred in (a favorite of mine, also well received and acclaimed) Bowfinger, wrote a novella and developed it into a script (Shop Girl), It’s Complicated (opposite Streep and Alec Baldwin). In 2009, an article in The Guardian listed Martin as one of the best actors never to receive an Oscar nomination.
His writing and music careers are even more impressive considering his fame and notoriety as a comedian/actor. Picasso at the Lapin Agile is a high point and displays his true genius. He writes pieces for The New Yorker and just won a Grammy for best Blue Grass album. Yes, I guess his career has gone nowhere since ’86. If you are talking about the “forgettable” comedies (the Pink Panther stuff, the Cheaper by the Dozen/Out-of-Towners stuff), I agree they are lacking but I like them because they show that he is still grounded in silly, slapstick comedy that just makes people laugh. What a talent.
