Watching it now for the first time

and it is not funny. Like at all.

Is this a generational thing where the humor was funny in the 80s and has dated badly?

anybody else find this movie completely unfunny?

I saw it opening weekend as a kid and thought it was hilarious. I don't know what I'd think seeing it for the first time today as an adult.

Why do retards come on and say they just watched a movie from 30 years ago? If you didn't see it when it came out you have nothing to say.

I'd actually say its aged well.... in the sense that it is probably more worthwhile to see today than it was back then.

It was definitely dissapointing back then... even with the unknown Martin Short (at the time), you go in with sky-high expectations with the great Steve Martin, and a Chevy Chase who was at the peak of Vacation fame. Strangely, some of the best, funniest moments are from the mouth of Martin Short..... His story with Dorothy Gish, or needing a stopwatch, preferably with a 2nd hand.

There's a lot of jokes that fail.... the burning bush..... But there's a lot to like, as well.... Steve Martin doing tons of a physical humor like an old vauedville Buster Keaton, the musical numbers.... Martin Short... I guess the odd man out is Chevy because i don't recall him doing a single funny thing, and that was dissapointing.

Definitely worth the time to check out, if you've never seen it... Lots of classic lines. Is it gut-busting? Of course not... but look at all the popular successful movies of modernday that makes tons of money... with Kevin Hart or Melissa McCarthy, where you literally don't even snicker a single time.... There are many genuine laughs in 3 Amigos, and where you aren't laughing, you're still enjoying yourself.

I'd say the IMDB rating is right on target. But no... to answer your earlier question... this film wasn't a riotous success back in the 80's, either. People expected more out of it.

"It was definitely dissapointing back then"

It's disappointing how few people can write 'disappointing' correctly.

The age of internet, all the information almost literally at your fingertips, and you still misspell common, easy words. Why?

I totally agree - shamefully unfunny.

I remember the expectations when it first came out were off the charts. It was the perfect blend of combining original SNL folks (whose movie careers were still somewhat hot) along with the next wave of SNL by using Martin Short. So the anticipation was huge. The three of them also appeared together on SNL to promote it.

I remember seeing it in the theater with friends and all we were talking about right afterwards was how bad it was - and I think that was about the last time we talked about it since it had nothing memorable.

Looking back on it now, I think this was the movie where you really could see the first signs of Chevy Chase proving how he could be very UNfunny. I don't think he had a single moment in this movie which made me even come close to laughing. He was already in some terrible movies before this. But his career just continued on a downward spiral from here.

I agree about Chevy Chase, never found him funny at all but the other two were brilliant. I can´t remember liking it much growing up but I caught this on TV yesterday and watched it to the end and was surprised how much I enjoyed it despite how silly it is.

Comedy evolves very quickly. I love this movie. But if I had not grown up with it, I doubt I would like it all today.

reply

No, it's not a "generational thing". I was born in the '50s and I saw the movie when it first came out in the '80s, and I didn't think it was very funny. Good comedy transcends generations and decades. There's written humor from the 18th and 19th centuries, and comedy movies from the 1920s that are still funny as hell, and a lot of comedy from now that isn't funny at all.

reply

Saw it in the theaters. I thought it was pleasant but only got about 3 decent laughs.

Caught it again decades later and found very few things funny. A mediocre movie that didn't age well.

The only thing that still strikes me as funny is the invisible guy thing.

This movie was funny as hell..

It’s a silly, carefree movie. How could you not like El Guapo and his idiot sidekick?! Short and Martin were funny for the most part. Chase, not as much.
