Honestly, great movie, rewatch value is real high.
This movie gets a lot of flack from some, and a lot of love from others. Honestly, a lot of elements going on in this film that help make it a fun film.
Tobe Hooper really gets the whole project, and what I love about both Chainsaw films he did, is that you can see he holds great love for his home state of Texas, thus helping people outside of it understand it's atmosphere a little better.
L.M Kit Carson also wrote a real well thought out script in my opinion and the thing whole ties together real clever like. Hard to believe, this guy helped write Paris, Texas with Sam Shepard two years before TCM 2 came out. A lot of funny jokes in this film too, although I'm sure some were ad-libbed.
All the actors do a wonderful job in this film. Especially Bill Moseley obviously, he really did great fleshing out his character. Caroline Williams does a great job too, and really distinguishes herself from other leading ladies in horror films. Jim Siedow, Dennis Hopper and Lou Perryman, all do great too, imo.
I really dig the cinematography in this film, some real interesting shots in this movie. Especially in the beginning when Dennis Hopper's character is introduced, on the side of the highway. The lighting also provides for great atmosphere, and really puts you in a specific mood!
Let's not forget that undeniably memorable opening scene.
And of course the soundtrack is great, I'm a big Stewart Copeland fan, and that song at the end credits lyrics/sound really fit the movie and help tie it up. A lot of other great tunes as well.
All in all, for a silly 80s horror movie, it has a lot to offer.
