So did everybody miss that this was satire?

I haven't watched the film because I heard how awful it was years ago but I just watch the Kanon films documentary and they covered this movie.

Apparently is was supposed to be stupid and awful because the director never wanted to make horror again, or at least not Leatherface horror, but was contracted to do exactly that.

So they turned it into a satire of the genre, an actress in the documentary said she didn't get how people (especially the producers) didn't know it was a comedy satire, when the poster is intentionally done up to be the Breakfast Club.

And I came on here expecting different in the reviews but aside from a few, there seems to be mostly people pissed at a terribly unscary horror film...and then some proclaiming this is a truly scary movie.

So did everybody miss the cue? Or was it just totally unfunny?

It is a dark comedy, but I think for that reason the film is so notorious with many fans. Much of the comedy was overlooked in the original because of the realism and strong horror imagery. The screenwriter L.M. Kit Carson understood if you can't redo what made the original great, do something great some other way.

I love TCM 2. It's actually my favorite. It's more over the top and fun than the other films. And I give it credit for trying to be different. A lot of these films tend to rehash the original movie's formula, because apparently if it's not broken, don't fix it. Fair enough, but that prevents the series from trying new things.

I completely agree.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

same here, summed it up nicely Wallace.

I couldn't agree with you more. And I saw the original TCM with The Hooper sitting directly behind me. Do you know what? He was laughing in some of the most disturbing scenes of the movie. He said that hos actors would have to leave the house to throw up because they put real dead animals on the hooks. The dude has a really twisted sense of humor and it really comes out in the sequel. I think this is my favorite of the series.

Weird how people get grossed out by being next to a dead animal on a hook, but are fine with eating it. Just shows that most people have no idea how their food is made.

Well, the smell of rotting meat may have something to do with it.

You got a point there. When I read "dead animals on a hook" recently killed farm animals came to mind. But I just read an article about how they stacked up euthanized cats and dogs from the city pound, and that it was beyond smelly.

reply

Yeah, I suspect even Leatherface had to go outside and hurl once in a while.

reply

The mask probably didn't help either. Must have been pretty gross and sweaty underneath.

I think it's both. Some people got it, but didn't find it funny. Some were just annoyed that a series became a satire of itself on the FIRST sequel. It lets you know right from the start that it's a comedy (leather face dances on top of a car with a long chainsaw, and wear a body on top of his that is shot off - they're not exactly hiding the comedic nature of the flick), but that doesn't mean it's what people wanted when they bought a ticket.

If you bought a ticket to saving private Ryan 2 and it was a slapstick comedy, it wouldn't matter whether it was on purpose or not. You'd still be ticked off.

reply

It's a piece of crap Parody of the first flick.

It's such a completely different movie than the original. That movie had some very dark, bizarre humor, but 2 was completely committed to being a comedy.

I hated it the first time I saw it, but giving it another chance years later really changed my opinion. I accepted it on its own terms, I guess, as the unique, demented ride that it is.
