A hundred soldiers fall to their deaths...

...and nobody cares.

nit-picking, but in a child movie such a thing is disturbing...in a way.

reply

It's not really a "kids'" as such. It's also to show how evil what's his name is.

reply

That's Muska. Especially when he laughs manaically afterward. (Hamill does this very well in the dub, too, BTW. Some might argue that its reminiscent of the Joker, but it works.)

reply

I wouldn't say "nobody cares", the viewer cares, for sure and the result of that is we hate the Muska character more.

reply

That part is indeed especially striking, while there's a fair amount of violence throughout the movie there are not neccesarily any loss of life (when the robot goes rampaging in the fortress, soldiers are seen evacuating the soon-to-blow-up gun turrets; when the battlecruiser goes down it's possible the crew are saved by lifeboats/escape pods etc.) as opposed to the part where the general and his troop fall and the ensuing chaos where several soldier are seen falling or pushed by robots off Laputa.

It certainly shows a foretaste of what would have come when Muska would use the military power of Laputa to further his own goals.

reply

hi blood'

well we do care.

you gotta remember though, this is not a turn-the-crank-mc-kiddy-disney film.

i know you are a Miyazaki fan, like we all are, and as such we know his films are intelligent and meant for all ages unlike some others i mentioned ;)

reply

Its not really a child movie per se. And please please please for the love of all the gods, do not compare it to disney. Miyazaki himself hates being compared to disney.
Most of his movies are directed for kids and adults alike. Many themes are serious and there are some darkness in them. Anime was never intented directly at childres, as animated movies are directed at kids in the west. Please keep that in mind!

Laputa has action-adventure violence that's similar to that found in Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Antz (with people implied of dying in exploding vehicles and mass battles, etc). But it's not quite as morbid as The Hunchback of Nortre Damme nor as visceral as Watership Down. Also animated villains falling to their deaths is a common way of dying anyway, the government soldiers and airmen were bad guys, though you see Sheeta and Pazu looking angry when Muska ruthlessly dispenses with them.

reply

i thought of it as an example of how ruthless he is to everyone who isnt him, just think what would happen if he succeeded in killing batzu (thats his name right?) and ruling the world!

reply

Nope, it's spelled "Pazu". It's only pronounced as "Patsu" in Disney's dub. I don't think that's correct pronounciation, but unlike MONONOKE, this is not a historical tale, it's a fantasy story, so there's no strict limitations on how to say it.

reply

I cared. Just watched today the movie for the first time and I kept thinking about that long after the movie had moved on to other parts. I wonder how I would have reacted as a child. Might have not cared at all.

reply

You know like, when Bambi's mother dies..
Scarred forever.

reply

I definitely cared. It was a shocking villainous moment.

reply

Sheeta cared. She told them to run when she realized what Muska was going to do to them.

reply

Well, they're military, killers themselves.

It's the kind of PG-friendly deaths you see in many movies - we see them fall, we do not actually see them die when they hit the surface a minute or so later.

It's (almost) the same with major blockbusters like 2012 - billions of people; men, women and children alike, are obviously crushed to death in landslides, boiled alive in lava, burnt, drowned and pulverized in all sorts of horrible ways but as long as we don't see it happen then everything is okay and we even get a happy ending!
