He must have been VERY disappointed when the project fell through. He had to start shaving again!
He wore a false beard in North Sea Hijack and was very proud of the fact the he was growing a real one for Tai-Pan, even doing several TV interviews at the time to show it off. It's good that he's so easily pleased.

Toshiro Mifune did the same thing for the movie Red Beard, and was unable to act in anything else because Kurosawa kept delaying the start of the film.
