This movie was a waste of time.

This movie came on at 4am. I could not sleep. I watched the entire movie.
After the movie ended. I felt like I just hit rock bottom. I wanted to die. This movie sucks.
PS - Michael Caine has been in a lot of *beep* movies.

Well it is hard to top that film by mizike80...Oh yeah, that's right. You've never made a film. People who can do, people that can't criticize.

You, Mr Neville, are the refuse of the past. You are discarded!

reply

Does that mean that I can't criticise Hitler because I've never personally been Chancellor of Germany myself?
Anyone who produces a film, book, painting or play should be prepared to receive either the praise or the criticism of anyone who sees them.
I'm sure Alan Alda would agree. And let's face it soylentgreen-1: this wasn't one of his better films.

I cant believe some grotesque gnome is chattering at me about how I am not allowed to say anything about one of the crappiest movies of all time. Let me get this straight; if I dont make movies, then I cannot talk about them? Come on kid, get realistic. If people didn't talk about their opinions regarding movies here, then nothing would be getting talked about. Also, I create music, not movies and I talk with my friends about our opinions on music. If you were to create movies, I am afraid you would continue to have opinions on other movies. Good day.

i watched this movie last week, why i don't know...it's pretty average. suppotying cast good. alda annoying. whole style of movie is strident and preachy. alda is better at playing a-holes (crimes and misdemeanors, the aviator) because he comes across as a not very likeable guy when he thinks he's likeable and right. he got lucky with MASH. i think he's kind of a jerk.

My sentiments exactly.

stephan...

Average may be giving it a bit more than it deserves, but there are a couple of good jokes here and there and the cast isn't bad, except for Alda. I especially thought Lise Hilboldt was very good. Alda is particularly bad here, both as actor and as director. Continuity was a major problem. Scenes started and went unfinished. Relationships changed on a whim, it seemed. I did like the interplay between the world of Hollywood as it contrasted with Sayeville. Just a few thoughts.

The camera-work on this movie was very poor. This cinematography is below even that of an episode of MASH. Alda also appears to be an ego-maniac.
He created this movie for himself to play out some fantasies he had with women and clearly wanted to portray himself as some sort of playboy.
I can't see anything remotely artistic here. This is to movies what Family Circus is to art.

You spelled pretense incorrectly.

As much as I like Alda, this is a bad film. He obviously had the respect of his peers during this time, as we can see from the stars in the supporting roles, but besides having the cache of being the first film of Scrubs star John C. McGinley... this movie has precious little else going for it IMHO.

I'd like to stick up for this film. It's no classic but it was a favourite guilty pleasure of mine years ago. I remember Alda's relationship with Pfeiffer's character being rather touching - good work from Michelle - and loved Michael Caine's flamboyant performance. I've no idea how I'd find it now, not having seen it for fifteen years or so, but I'm pretty sure it's more fun that it's reputation seems to suggest.

Compared to Alda's earlier, better remembered hit The Four Seasons - which I found insufferable - Sweet Liberty was a low-key charmer.

reply

It appears the problem with this film is Alda. Bad direction and a typically annoying performance. I liked Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins, Michelle Pfeiffer and Lise Hilboldt were all good in their roles.

reply

I think the writing is poor too, a boring movie.

reply

its not a classic but its not horrible, in fact if you compare it to a LOT of 80's comedies it holds up very well, and the supporting cast is great pfeiffer, bob hoskins and michael caine

reply

Yeah? Well I LOVED this movie. I saw it numerous times on cable when it first came out & recently Tivo'd it. I wondered if it would hold up & it did easily. I love Alda's character as he tries to get Hollywood to make a movie with at least a semblence of quality that appeals to somebody besides 14 year old boys (cause we all know Hollywood would never be guilty of that). I love the relationship with his mother. I love the relationship with his girlfriend. I love how it shows movie stars as they really are: insufferable egomaniacs (Caine) and/or talented but emotional cripples (Pfeiffer). I love how it shows the politics inherent in the movie business. If I have any complaints about it, it's that I didn't think making the screenwriter (Hoskins) a complete hack/syncophant was necessary. Wonder why Alda went that route. Comic relief perhaps?

reply

I totally agree. A good movie. You said all that I was thinking when my wife and I just finished watching it tonight.

reply

Yep. Great movie!

I thought the movie was just kind of"there". Completely inessential. Maybe if you're an absolute diehard fan of one of the actors, I could see watching it. But other than that, there's really no reason to see this movie at this point. I watched it because it has Bob Hoskins in it, but if you're seeing it for him, there are much better films to watch first.

reply

I have always loved this movie. It doesn't ask anything from you, it's just a sunny, feel good movie.

reply

A huge flaming piece of dung. Alda shouldn't be allowed to direct anything else

reply

Thought the biggest problem was that it tried to do too much. Too many scenes. In the end I bet a lot got left on the cutting room floor. That's why a lot seems to have sort of an unfinished feeling.

Otherwise it's really an early version of State & Main.

reply

I can see why this film was a critical and financial bomb. If you think this is a good film you must be brain dead. This movie almost sank Alda's career. Actually it kind of succeeded.

How is this a critical bomb? 75% on RT
