The Zone

In the commentary for Street of Crocodiles (from The Quay Brothers: The Short Films 1979 - 2003 DVD), the Quay Brothers talk about the Zone. Does anyone know whether this is in any way related to Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's Roadside Picnic (or Tarkovsky's Stalker)? or is the link just incidental?

After recently watching Stalker it has led me to believe that there are some links between the films and I would have thought that if they are indeed there then they would be intentional, judging by the Quays' intelligence and eductaion. However I have not yet read Bruno Schulz' book, so cannot be sure that something like this is not mentioned in that.

Does anyone else know / have any ideas about this?

The anonymous offering of human saliva by an attendant caretaker activates and releases the Schulzian theatre from stasis into permanent flux. Myth stalks the streets of this parasitical zone where the mythological ascension of the everyday is charted by a marginal interloper who threads himself through this one night of the Great Season.

Funny you should mention that, I kept thinking of Stalker every time they mentioned "the zone".

I'm currently reading Schulz's book, which was written many years prior to Stalker. I'm pretty sure it's just coincidental that they use the same term.
