Star Trek Fans Would Hate The Voyage Home if It Were Released Today

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is considered one of the great franchise films, but fans today would hate the comedy and the overt political message.

Interesting points in the article, but TVH was done so well and 'feel good' it was just an undeniably great movie for fans and non fans alike, (like Star Trek goes BTTF meets Crocodile Dundee). hence why it was a break out box office hit

It's the only movie that channelled the original TV program - though only the comic episodes like Mudd or Tribbles. I think it would do OK today.

Actually, every movie featuring the original crew channeled episodes from The Original Series. Here are some examples:

The Motion Picture: “The Changeling” (the plot); “The Corbomite Maneuver” (there's not much action, the Enterprise comes face to face with the unknown—a gigantic alien space vessel—and the crew have to put their heads together to prevail. Also, the way crewman Dave Baily willingly decides to leave the Enterprise and go off with the alien ship brings to mind the way Decker decides to leave the Enterprise and merge with V’ger); “The Doomsday Machine” (both stories involve a humongous thing freely traversing the galaxy destroying vessels and planets. And both feature a Capt Decker, the earlier one the father of the latter); and “Metamorphosis” (a mature and serious story where the crew encounter the unknown and have to deal with it); also, the Ilia-probe brings to mind the androids in “What Are Little Girls Made of?," “I, Mudd” and “Requiem for Methuselah.” Lastly, despite the film's plot similarities to "The Doomsday Machine," it has more in common with “The Cage," Roddenberry’s first stab at Star Trek. Like The Motion Picture, “The Cage” is a cerebral sci-fi drama with very little action.

The Wrath of Khan: “Space Seed” (Khan and his banishment); and “Balance of Terror” (the suspenseful space dogfight).

The Search for Spock: “The Menagerie” (Kirk’s willingness to sacrifice everything for his treasured friend and first officer is reminiscent of Spock’s willingness to risk all for Captain Pike); “Amok Time” (teenage Spock going through Vulcan pon farr); and “Where No Man Has Gone Before” (the showdown between Kirk and Kruge is reminiscent of the apocalyptic showdown between Kirk and Gary Mitchell).

The Final Frontier: “The Way to Eden” (the plot); and “Who Mourns for Adonais?” (ditto).

The Undiscovered Country: “Space Seed” (the dinner scene); “Metamorphosis” (the universal translator); “The Man Trap” (the shapeshifter); and “Whom Gods Destroy” (ditto).

There are no doubt further associations; these are just some quick examples.

In the 79 episodes of the three-year series, there were only three comedic ones: “I, Mudd," “The Trouble with Tribbles” and “A Piece of the Action.”

It was fucking stupid in 1986 and it is fucking stupid today.

YOU'RE fucking stupid.

Uncalled for - but personally, I would never trust anyone who hates dogs.

Exactly.

That article is thought-provoking; however, I'm not sure that fans would actually hate TVH if it came out today.

The Orville has a lot of comedy, and many Star Trek fans feel like that show is more Trek than the official Trek shows currently being produced by Paramount.

Also, the save-the-whales messaging in TVH isn't really the type of identity politics or "woke" writing the anti-woke crowd is usually upset over.

As a kid I hated it, the whales and the lady are stupid and no space. Only after watching TOS and the movie trilogy (2-4), I started to like the movie. It is still far from my favorites (2,6,8), but it is then the next best Star Trek movie for me. But only because all other movies have specific flaws, which makes me prefer them less as 4.

1 is the motionless movie, too boring, better pacing and I would like it much more
3 is also imo boring, I don't like the change of the female Vulcan, but I started to appretiate the movie nowadays more, especially the Klingons.
5 is so wrong in many areas
7 you exactly feel that they jumped from TV directly to cinema, everything feels a bit off on the Ent D (like Power Rangers the Movie is different to the TV show)
9 is a pure Star Trek episode, unfortunately for TV, not cinema, but instead of 7 you feel the budget.
10 is a clusterfuck, but as much I hate the Remans, I like the Romulans.
11 is Star Trek in the name only, JarJar Abrams abomination, but it is fun so!
12 could have been it, everything is there, but the whole "NO, i am not Khan" plot is stupid AF.
13 is a clusterfuck, but a shame for the perfect depiction of the TOS crew

I hated it then, and still hate it now.
