Overrated

I think this film is vastly overrated. I suspect much of it is due to nostalgia from people who saw it when they were kids. The film isn't really that interesting or entertaining. The performances are decent, but nothing exceptional. I found the characters to be annoying and the story to be average at best. There is some nice cinematography and good music, but overall this film is fairly mediocre. My rating is a 6/10.

Nostalgia has something to do with it for sure, but I think it goes deeper than that for some people.

At the end of the film, we see that Gordy writes:

"I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus, does anyone?"

If that line doesn't cut you deep, make you tear up a little, then yeah, I doubt you will think much of this film. For others, like myself, we can relate to it. It is the essence of having that kind of childhood, and it's very powerful.

I totally disagree about the performances as well. This is some of the finest child acting I've ever seen, especially River Phoenix.

My rating is 10/10.

Disagree....I think what you miss is how many that first read the novella were quite happy of a movie version (though there are a couple of parts I would have loved to have seen in the movie that were in the novella - for example, when the main character visits Ace later in life and finds him to be a drunk living in squalor).

That’s right little snowflake. Allaby.

This is a movie for adults, who were kids from the 80s. Boyz in the Hood took inspiration from this movie.

Breakfast Club is another one of ours. All these movies are classics, better than anything your generation will ever be capable of making.

Now run along. There’s a Hulk movie somewhere for you to watch and love. Even though it won’t be a patch on the original 80s TV series version.

It sucks to be a snowflake. You have nothing original. Nothing.

Everyone loves snowflakes! Nothing wrong with being a snowflake.

I was a kid in the 80s.

What generation do you think I am a part of? Do I look really young or something?

Not a big fan of the Hulk movies. I like a lot of classics and foreign language film and independent films that you probably haven't heard of.

Not a snowflake, but I do like the look of snowflakes falling on a winter day.

Not overrated at all. I'm one of those people who reads the book and sees the movie. I usually say, "the book was better".

But in this case, I enjoyed the movie even more because of all the wonderful performances. Every actor was spot on with his character. They brought humor and pathos to life.

To this day I can't get over Kiefer Sutherland's performance as the alpha male Ace. All he had to do was say a few words or snap his fingers and his gang fell in line. If he had used his power of leadership for good, he could have gone far in life. Always wished I had his leadership skills.
