What actually is root beer?

Must be an American thing, they don't have it Britain.

reply

It's been a soda or carbonated soft drink for generations made from the sassafras plant root as the primary flavor. we used to have lots of drive in diners called A&W that sold it along with food. A&W root beer is still available today, just not as many of the drive ins are still around anymore.

reply

Its a carbonated beverage with the main flavoring ingredient derived from the sassafras root, as referenced in the name.

reply

It's evil, medicinal and just plain awful.

reply

It tastes a lot like liquid licorice to me.

reply

It makes your hair fall out and turns you impotent.

Native Americans gave it to victims of human sacrifice so that the horrific taste would take their mind off the pain of having their hear excised.

The Japanese offered it to General MacArthur so he would not return.

In Greek mythology the damned were doomed to spend eternity drinking an endless bottle of it.

Jesus turned water into it, which explains why he was Crucified

There are many kinds and similar products like sasparilla and birch beer. Small batch root beer is fantastic. The commercial stuff isn't that great. There's an east coast brand, Stewart's, that's the absolute best. Also comes from a small chain of drive ins like A&W.

reply

I think it is similar to Dandelion and burdock.

Root Beer used to be available from McDonalds in England, certainly in the 1980s but I haven't seen it on their menu for some years.
