Friendship 7

Right after the titles, we see a girl of about 10, in a field somewhere in the Midwest, looking up at the stars. She sees a number of meteors, which she calls 'just wishers', then she sees one moving star that stays bright, but does fluctuate in brightness. Elated, she exclaims, "John Glenn winked at me!"
It is very sentimental, but not accurate. John Glenn's flight, Friendship 7, launched at 9:47 am EST on February 20,1963, and landed at 2:43 pm est. on the same day. Unless the farm was in Australia, she would not have been able to see John Glenn in the evening sky. In fact the people of city of Perth did leave their lights on all night as a "g'day" to the astronaut as he passed over.
The movie seemed to be marked by a preference for sentimentality over fact.

Ya. I remember watching John Glenns flight on TV in my second grade class back in the day.

Yes that's definitely the biggest error in this movie - everything else is totally accurate to real life.

It was in 1962.

"Please use elevator, stairs stuck between floors."
