I think it's becoming even more of a classic today. In the past decade there's been a steadily increasing stream of males cheating their way into female spaces because they "feel" like it. What I liked best in this film is the final point: No sir, I didn't really experience what is feels like to be black, because I can go back to being white. The whole concept of "I feel like a different gender inside" is leading to an erosion of long fought for female protection. It's the final takeover by white males.

***So I've seen 4 movies/wk in theatre for a 1/4 century, call me crazy?**

People calling this a racist film are missing the point.

It's definitely a classic

Yes it was very funny but I haven't seen it on tv in years, politically correct types probably cried racism.

The Millennials and PC babies will be all over this

Same with Sixteen Candles, Breakfast At Tiffany's and Revenge of the Nerds. Surprised they haven't tried to get To Kill A Mockingbird removed from schools.

Good point

I wouldn't call this a classic. The premise of the movie seemed like it's gonna create a lot of funny situations, but something went wrong during the execution. In the beginning I did laugh a couple of times (so far so good), but later movie stopped being funny and just became silly. It's like the creators of the movie thought that disguising a white guy as black guy is in itself funny enough, and they don't have to come up with funny jokes as well. Well, it didn't work out that way. I think the rating suits the movie fine.

reply

They weren't just going for jokes, there was also a point being made. I haven't seen the film in 20 plus years, but I remember that it had a point to make and it made rather well.

reply

Maybe it did make a point, but as a comedy it doesn't work very well. There are movies that made the same point better than this one. Maybe it was funnier in the 80's, who knows? I just watched it for the first time.

Its definitely a movie of its time, like a lot of stuff from the 80s. What made it stand out was the black face. Unfortunately a lot of people couldnt or wouldnt see past it at the time, in fact to this day some still cant get past it even without seeing it.

Its as funny as a low budget lighthearted 80s comedy can be. Its not the best, but not the worst by any means. I grew up in the 80s and the low budget shit youd find at the rental stores was a plenty.

"It's definitely a movie of its time"

I see what you mean, it's one of those "you had to be there" movies. That's why I responded to this thread that called it a classic movie, cause this description is opposite of "classic".

It sure has a great cast though... James Earl Jones (who's the best thing about the movie), Leslie Nielsen and a young Julia Louis-Dreifus prior to her Seinfeld fame.

Yeah theres tons of movies that growing up I thought were the shit, then I saw a couple of them again later in life and realised I was just really easily pleased as a kid lol. Like American ninja, or no retreat no surrender. Great movies as far as me and my friends were concerned, but ultimately just really cheesy karate movies which everyone was doing at the time.
