If they made this film today, would the director or producers been hounded off Twitter or Facebook by today's ultra-nuts PC attack dogs?

I doubt he would have made the movie the same way as he did at that time. It would still be an intriguing topic to explore, it just would have to be handled a bit different.
Else it would not take an "ultra-nut pc attack dog" but just some common non-racist person to call BS.

Yes.
Nowadays EVERYONE is so touch feely about the silliest things. Nowadays everyone feels they have the right to sue everyone else for the dumbest reasons. Also everyone feels they can internet shame others just because THEY don’t like something.
