I think she kidnapped Charles to create a good impression with her mother and her school chums. She used his respectable image to plump up her own. After all, she was a bit of a tart. I love this film. I could watch it again and again. However, for me, it is more a vehicle for an up-and-coming star: Ray Liotta.

I think she actually wants to try mainstream out, something we understand more when we meet Liotta. (She's lived through the danger of something wild and wants no part of it.) The physical transformation - the dresses, the hairstyle - suggests that, as well as her question to Charlie at the end, "What are you going to do now that you've seen the other side?" The ending demonstrates that Audrey is ready for a balance between the two, and Charlie is the right guy for it.
