Any other great Punk films?

Is there any other great Punk films out there that anyone would reccommend?

I recently saw '24 Hour Party People' starring Steve Coogan. It was brilliant!
Highly recommend it.

Ya SLC Punk is what I was gonna say too, but it is like someone said, more about just growing up than being a punk. There are only a handful of movies, it seems, that genuinely attempt to capture the feel of the real punk movement.

There's so much focus on the 60s and tons of footage of Woodstock to reminisce for people who grew up during that era, yet for the 70s it seems like if you weren't there, there isn't a lot you can watch in movies or documentaries to show how it was. Maybe in another 10 years or so, more stuff will be compiled in order to depict the 70s. Maybe not. Maybe it was because punk was more "underground," I dunno.

That seems to be changing, of late, though. Control and The Runaways are recent great punk rock biopics that really captured the era, though in two different places (Manchester and LA, respectively). There's 24 Hour Party People from a few years back, about the Manchester scene. What We Do Is Secret, another one about LA, wasn't as good (though it had it's moments), but at least the effort is being made. Interesting that the four recent punk biopics set in the classic 70s era have focused on two cities that weren't the capitals of Punk. Maybe recent filmmakers have thought Manchester and Los Angeles have been underreated in accounts of the movement? All the music historians did seem to focus exclusively on New York and London...

It looks like Akron will be the next city that gets focused in one of these, as there's a Devo biopic in the works. There'd been Blondie and Ramones biopics in the works, but I haven't heard any news about them in a long while, so who knows?

SLC Punk is an excellent film. It's more about growing up than it is about punk, though.

The Filth and the Fury is a FANTASTIC documentary about the Sex Pistols.

Suburbia (1985, I think, not the 90s Linklater movie, although that's very good as well) is also worth seeing because of its honesty, though pretty badly made.

reply

I agree I think The Filth and the Fury was excellent!

REPO MAN. The Great Rock and Roll Swindle, while heavily flawed, is a helluva lot of anarchic fun.

oh man, I love Repo Man! It's so absurdly cool, bizarre, and memorable

The one with Diane Lane is called Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains, and it's a brilliant film. It actually has Paul Cook, and Steve Jones in it, along with a member of the Clash, Mick Jones I think.
To me Punk Cinema actually predates Punk music, films by Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, Andy Warhol, and early John Waters have a very punk aesthetic to them. I think what you're looking for is films about Punk.

reply

I'm actually not a big fan of Sid and Nancy but...

I highly, highly recommend Repo Man and Return of the Living Dead if you want camp, punk, and violence. Fun stuff.

The Decline of Western Civilization.

Jubilee was made during punk movement and stars some of the Punk stars at the time. It's a decent movie, but hard to find.

Glory Daze

Control - Ian Curtis and Joy Division, pretty excellent.

It's not a "punk" movie, but if you like Joe Strummer then it's worth checking out mystery train
