why watch this film?

Who cares? It sort of claims to be funny but which ever way you slice it, it isnt. And who really would chose to spend 2 and half hours with this guy? Somebody please explain the appeal of this film, it seems to be a disaster on every possible level. Who cares?

It's a delicious blend of history, love, and the fear of nuclear war nicely tied together in the end by Burt Reynolds. I wished it was longer.

I saw this in a theater of people who laughed alot (me too), so to say it isn't funny is just not true except to you. It may seem funnier to those who have lived in the South, and certainly truer. The revealing things that happen in front of this guy's lens are often hilarious, sometimes shocking, but almost always interesting. It is too long in segments, it would probably be better if it was twenty or thirty minutes shorter, but I can say the same for many movies. Ross himself is a bit of an annoying nerd, but he never denies that, it's an undeniable part of the nature of himself he's revealing. At least he isn't overly slick....it's a true testament to the regular guy facing a world of strange, sometimes unnerving but often exhilarating people.

not every film is meant for everybody and obviously this one isn't for you. i thought it was a charming slice of life type doc. that woman trying to ross married was a trip.

I would show this film in every high school sex education class in America.... as a warning to young women.

This is a perfect portrait of the artist as emo boy. He wants romance, talks the talk, but shuns committment. Sure, he's in touch with emotions but mainly he's in touch with HIS emotions. And while he has seeming troubles with his love life, they're pretty much selfcreated.

Basically, this type of guy is a time waster. You want to spend endless hours hearing about how he feels about such deep matters about nuclear war and the American Civil War? Sure, go ahead. Just know that it isn't going to lead anywhere.

Why should I care if you enjoy it or not? I thought it was funny. My enjoyment is much more important to me than your enjoyment.

In 1988 I got a lot out of this, and in 2012 it still has the same effect.

Some people get a lot our of Proust's "Remembrance of Things Past" trilogy...others don't.

Some people get a lot of "People" or "US" magazines or "The Weekly World News"...others don't.

Each to their own.

It took four sittings for me to get through this but I'm glad I stuck with it. It's always fascinating to see how other people live -- more or less "ordinary" people as opposed to the wealthy and powerful. These folks were ordinary but they weren't boring. Well, except for the attorney there at the end, who was obviously attached to someone else but couldn't be honest with Ross and tell him there was no hope.

I loved Charlotte, the matchmaker, whose highest compliment was that a person was 'interesting'.

I also loved the scene with the blues singer, practicing at the piano man's house with all the kids listening through the screen door. The older girl moved another child aside to position the smallest one so that he could see. Loved her.

Also fun was the look back at fashion and hairstyles from the 80's.
