What's the real year of this movie?

Judging by the fashions and cars seen in this movie, is must have been made much earlier than 1986. It looks to me to be somewhere between 1978 and 1981. Any guesses?

The movie took five years for him to finish. So some of it probably goes back to 1981.

At the girl's school, the girls listen to a rendition of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are." That song came out in 1978, so that is the earliest that the movie was filmed. When Ross is talking to his ex-girlfriend who went to law school, a Rubik's Cube is on the stairs. I don't think those were available in the US until 1981. The years of filming, then are probably 79-81 or 82.

81 - 86

There's a reference to Burt Reynolds' worst movie, "Stroker Ace" which came out in 1983; one of the girls in the film auditioned for a cameo in it.

I'm pretty sure most of it was filmed in 1981 or 1982; this was when I graduated from high school so those hair and clothing styles are very familiar to me.

Wikipedia says it was made (filmed) in 1981 but released in 1986.

In this interview Ross estimates that the movie took five months of filming. As other commenters have stated, that five months was in 1981.
