Incredibly underrated

I just watched this last night for the first time and absolutely loved it, I really feel that this has been unfairly forgotten probably due to being overshadowed by Do the Right Thing. No doubt the latter film is great and definitely has a much broader scope which would understandably make it appeal to a wider audience, but She's Gotta Have It is a masterpiece as well and is probably one of the most stunning feature debuts by a known director ever made, very comparable to Scorsese's I Call First aka Who's That Knocking on My Door. I wish Criterion would give this a good, proper DVD release w/ the director's cut as the current MGM dvd has no special features whatsoever, it definitely deserves the treatment from the company who also did Do the Right Thing so proud.

Agreed about this movie being underrated.

Agreed, this is Lee's best film. Tender, sweet, funny, true. Charming, fresh, playful. She's Gotta Have It is one of the finest American films of the 80s, and it's a shame that IMDB voters have not acknowledged it as so (yet).
Instead, films like The Prestige is on the top 250 (and way up, too), which is just ridiculous.

unfortunately that seems to be the case with many of Lee's films. Do The Right Thing is monumental. A phenomenal timeless piece of film. It's undeniable, but so is She's Gotta Have It & Crooklyn. They're all three on the same level, as far as I'm concerned.

But Do The Right Thing casts a large shadow and many people do not like Spike Lee as a person, so they usually do not seek past that.
