A real Gem

Tom Conti is superb. His best film. Human and down to earth emotions, a very graceful portrayal of human feelings. A real gem.

i'll second that. i really enjoyed it as well. you only had to wait a year and a half for a response to your thread. it's a shame more people don't watch this movie, it's way underrated.

Only a month and a half to find another fan. I have loved this movie for years. Gentle, beautiful to look at, Conti is totally real. I'm usually not sold on any film with a religious bent, but this is out of the ordinary. I really enjoyed the attempt to make the whole Pope-thing more human. I'd love to get a copy but I can't even find a video library where I can borrow it.

let's count some more! nine months later, another comment on this thread.

and i agree... it's an absolutely charming film.

I have never posted on this site before, but I like this movie so much that I have to agree with y'all.

I watched this film one Easter on TV about 10 years ago and absolutely loved it.

Absolutely one of the most underrated movies out there. Superb acting and a real message. Why are there so many low-budget grade D movies now available on DVD while this one has been allowed to fade into obscurity?

reply

So is my comment like 2 years later or something? Yes, the fans trickle in...like water torture or something.

I saw this movie years ago on cable. I am not from a really spiritual household, we were told to make our own choices growing up. (Dad's Jewish, Mom's Catholic, go figure.) But this movie really touched me. The performances were great, Tom Conti instantly became a favorite of mine.

It's a sweet little story, and I was thrilled when I found it on VHS at a video store selling off their stock.

True, there are some things about the story that prove it's not a documentary. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the film, though. It's worth it.

I have no idea if it's aged well, but I know it was playing on one of the religious stations on cable not too long ago.

If you're looking for it, I would try finding a used copy on Ebay or Amazon. Amazon usually has the best prices, the ebay prices I've seen are a bit jacked up. I too wish they would release it on dvd...even though I guess my vhs copy is kind of valuable now, though! Not that I'll part with it anytime soon.

I'm going to force it on my boyfriend on Easter. If I attend church for him on major holidays, Catholic mass no less, he can certainly sit through a sweet little movie for his half-Jew girlfriend.

For serious, Tom Conti needs to get a series or something. He's not famous, but Julia Roberts is? Truly, there is no justice in the world.

reply

I will confirm that as well. I've viewed this movie numerous times but sadly I can no longer find it. I can't put my finger on why, but this movie always lingers in my memory. For a movie that is little known you would have to say it is underrated.

reply

I loved the movie too, but haven't seen it for a long time as it doesn't seem very available. A great theme of humanizing the Pope and Tom Conti is wonderful in the role. I've been a great fan of his ever since. Yes, an under-rated, sadly little known gem.

I remember seeing this on Encore or Starz in the 90s...and thinking it was really really good. Too bad it's out of print.

I saw this film on TV today (in South Korea!) and I loved it. Tom Conti was great and the cardinals were so cute in this movie lol.

I watched this on the TBN network in the middle of the night. I know I had seen the film before perhaps almost 20 years ago but it was wonderful seeing it again. Great movie with a great Tom Conti.

I just bought a VHS copy on eBay and am watching it now - LOVE this movie and LOVE Tom Conti! Another of my favorites of his is "American Dreamer" with JoBeth Williams - makes me laugh after all this time!

reply

I had to comment because these are my 2 favorite Tom Conti movies too! Since the cardinals are voting on a new Pope right now--where is Pope Leo when we need him the most!! American Dreamer is also very sweet. And where is Tom Conti, such a great talent and no one is using him in a movie or TV series????

reply

I saw this movie and loved it. Watched it several times during the rental period I had it on. Would love to own it.

reply

I agree--this is a movie that stays with you. Conti's human portrayal is brilliant, understated, and very watchable.

Watch his reaction as he realizes he is the next pope. Classic.

reply

It would be nice if it ever came out on DVD.

I thought that I would join y'all in praising this movie. I saw it several years ago, and it also stuck with me. I always check to see if it is there when I'm browsing for DVD's. I would love to see the movie again, but I'm almost to the point of giving up on it. Another movie that is similiar in feel is Conspiracy of Hearts, @1960. It is about a group of nuns hiding children from the German Army during WWII.

I concur with you all. I saw this movie years ago (15+?) and it always stayed with me. I had a crap copy on VHS but when I moved I lost it. I was able to acquire a DVD of it on Ebay... of course the guy selling it didn't mention it was a "pirated" copy so I got screwed. All that said, it's still a good copy & I am blessed to have it.
I've always been a huge fan of Tom Conti's. It really is his performance & Giancarlo Giannini's that makes this movie worth watching.
Understated, underrated and absolutely moving... ***** stars! :)

A great loving movie, perhaps my favorite. I love everything about this movie and it makes me proud to be a Catholic, despite everything to the contrary.

tcw, where did you see this movie? Hopefully it was on TV. I posted for the first time, over three years ago, about this movie, and I have still yet to be able to see it anywhere.

I wish I could buy it on DVD for my mother; she would surely love it.

I've been looking for this one for quite a while. I had to wait so long to get a good copy of "Night of the Generals" so I'm sure that evetually I'll find this one too.

I was surprised to see so many fans of this film, which I finally got from Amazon this weekend. I waited almost ten years to finally find a copy and I agree with everyone else about how special this movie is. You'll excuse me while I watch it now. Aloha!

I loved this film, too.
The Pope played by Tom Conti (an actor I love) reminded me of Pope John Paul I the 33 days Pope from northeastern Italy whose name Pope John Paul II took as his own to honor his immediate predecessor.
