At the end of the film....

Why did they separate Maria from Boyle? Didn't they see they loved each other? If they had to deport Maria and her kids, why not allow Boyle to go with them? Unless he didn't want to go?

It was a really tragic scene that ended a powerful film. James Woods was fantastic in the way he looked as he was being arrested and just felt horrible because Maria would be sent back to El Salvador.

she was sent to a guatamala refugee camp. think of how many would flood the country w/o any border control. just doing their job.

Still, why take them away from Boyle? Why couldn't they send him with them or something?

Surprisingly, "But we love each other" doesn't usually work with border patrol officers. They tend to stick with the laws and stuff. Boyle was an American citizen so they can't deport him.

They had arrested Boyle, presumably for harboring an illegal, and perhaps for disorderly conduct on the bus. He would not be allowed to leave the country any time soon. But the question is, could Boyle have gone to Guatamala? Would he be allowed permanent residence? The film didn't really give us enough information about why he couldn't go somewhere with Maria, although it's clear that somewhere couldn't be El Salvador.
