Did he ever find Maria

I just finished watching this movie, it's a strange feeling, liking a movie this much when it's so sad.

I would like to know if Richard Boyle was a real person, and if he ever find Maria?

reply

This is definitely one of Stone's best films and it is based on the experiences of Richard Boyle, a real war photographer. There are obviously fictional elements to the film, but the tone and politics are spot-on, perfectly capturing the paranoid fear about Communism of the American government during the latter part Cold War.

As for whether or not Boyle ever found Maria, I couldn't tell you. I hope so.

I too wonder if he has found Maria yet. Any one knows?

Why did the police separate Maria and Boyle? Boyle could have left the country as well could he not?

It's those kinds of scenes like that one at the end of Salvador that make you despise cops.

What do you mean "paranoid fear about communism?" There actually were real Communist rebels in El Salvador, backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba. They were even shown in this left-wing movie. It's amazing that no matter how much stark, blatant evidence of Communist activity you give to an American leftist they'll still call you paranoid for believing your own eyes.

I think that he never did. It's known that in mid 90s he married with some Fillipino girl, who was 30 years younger than he is.

reply

It is said Maria might not be real. Also the photographer that died was loosely based on another person, John Hoagland.
