Great film that should be re released by gold.

Robotech the movie or the untold story is -i think- the best in the saga. I’m one of the lucky ones to own this movie, I purchased it on vhs video some years ago and had it converted onto dvd. This is one of the best films I’ve seen in the entire robotech saga. The story is fast moving and pulls you right in, plus I also love the military and the political story line within the film. I’ve been a fan of robotech since the 1985 series (macross saga) and I own all 85 episodes that where re released by manga, but Robotech the movie or the untold story is in my option the best of the bunch, I also own the macross plus box set and the story in that ‘I have to say’ is a let down ‘don’t get me wrong’ the story is good but could have been better. I would also like to say i cant understand why Robotech the movie is so difficult to purchase as it has not been re released in europe and If it was digitally re-mastered and released on DVD in europe I could see strong sales in the EU. All in all I’d score the movie ten out of ten. / plus i've been reading about megazone 23 and the alternate ending added, love to see that one day, maybe manga will release it in the uk.

Custodians how is your copy of Robotech The Movie? I transfered my VHS to DVD recently but my tape whilst still ahving sharp picture, good contrast and brightness levels had a fair amount of white noise on it. I'm not sure to the legality but I was considering uploading mine on the net to allows others to have a copy since Harmony GOld don't really acknowledge it's exsistance (hence why no dvd release yet). Manga own the rights to the MEgazone 23 OAV that was done in the late 80's early 90's and as such would only be able to release that however ADV owns the original MZ 23 which was used to create RTM. It is available on Region 1 and will probably get a Region 2 release eventually.

I'd like to see this sometime.

And I did. It must come to DVD, even if it's limited I would so buy a copy. Just hope it's not like 50 bucks though.

I have it on VHS although dubbed in my native language Swedish (though I wouldnt have it any other way since I grew up watching that version), the very beginning of the movie is heavily distorted due to the VHS tape being old and worn out but the rest of the movie is crystal clear! I should try to convert it to DVD some day soon :-)

That'd be awesome to have since there is also a spanish version floating around the net aswell. It'd be awesome to get several languages compiled together for it.

reply

I watched it in spanish once. I'll stick with english.

Agreed. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. The series is great, but THE MOVIE just feels like a great complete story in only 82 minutes. I find myself watching the movie more because of that.

MEGAZONE 23 films are pretty good, too. But if you're a fan of the ROBOTECH MOVIE, and have watched it a lot like me, you might not like MEGAZONE 23 as much. A lot of anime films would take that one over Robotech, but I've watched the other too much. Example, the characters in Robotech Movie seem more "grown up".

There is several reasons why it will never see a release in the EU, US, or anywhere else. The biggest reason though is because Carl Macek disowned the film after it's horrible test run in Texas.

So? It's not like the film is public domain. Carl's dead. It's not up to him anymore.

Other problems consist of taking 16mm film and combining it with 35mm film. which btw on the big screen looks horrendous.

So how does that affect a DVD/Blu-Ray release?

Harmony Gold screwed with the script Macek had worked on and changed to much from what Macek had originally intended which was to do a straight dub of Megazone 23.

That's not a reason.

Harmony Golds storage rooms were flooded and the original negatives were destroyed.

That wasn't actually true. Unless you want to tell me the SOUTHERN CROSS footage of the movie available in the A&E box set was actually made from bootleg material.

Also I don't know who owns the License to Megazone 23 or Southern Cross in Europe, but in the US Harmony Gold kept the license to Southern Cross but dropped the license to Megazone 23.

Yes, now that Carl Macek has passed on, no ownership of MEGAZONE 23 PART 1 is the one reason why there will never be a new release of the full, uncut ROBOTECH: THE MOVIE.

Carl supposedly prevented it from being released with the ADV box set of the series.

Though honestly I don't know why people like this film at all, it was terrible Carl Macek admitted it was terrible and he's the creator of Robotech!, and it doesn't even hold a candle to the movie "Macross: Do you Remember Love?" which was many times better.

There have been far worse movies, with much bigger fanbases. It's a so bad it's good kind of movie. It's sloppily edited, but a fun, entertaining movie with good characters, music, and action. And who cares if Carl Macek hated it? He also wanted ROBOTECH: LOVE LIVE ALIVE to be made, and that film might-as-well have been called ROBOTECH FLASHBACKS: THE MOVIE.

MACROSS: DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE? is a good film, but is nothing like ROBOTECH: THE MOVIE. It's silly to denounce one film simply because the other is better.

For all we know the Southern Cross footage could be work that was on broadcast masters that they never used for the show, if the flood story is correct. This would mean they would have other sources for the A&E Box set cut. There could be a complete tape master floating around somewhere, but as mentioned due to licensing problems with the footage it probably will never get an official DVD release.

As for Blu ray, Harmony Gold has stated quite a few times at conventions that they do not even have enough funds/man power to make HD masters of the original 16 mm film masters of Robotech. What makes anyone think they would make a HD master of a film they do not consider cannon anymore? And that is assuming that they still have a film master of the movie in it's entirety.

reply

I wouldn't be expecting an HD remastering anyway. I always figured if they could put it on DVD it would be like the typical bootleg, only official.
