Locations update August 2006

Bob and Michelle's House
It is indeed number 5 Branham Lane in Baildon. It was like stepping back in time to 1986... The only thing that had changed was the front lawn was more landscaped. The double garage is still white and the front door is the same!

After driving 200 miles from Bucks we couldn't just walk away without knocking on the door, or ringing that famous bell! So, we parked up, and walked up the all too familiar driveway... With butterflies in our tummy we rang the bell, and how we laughed when we heard that "ding-dong" chime! Unfortunately there was no-one in, so we walked back the the car. We were just about to drive away, when we saw a couple walk up the drive and let themselves in. It was too good to to be true and we couldnt miss up the opportunity. They had been out for a walk as there were two pairs of muddy hiking boots on the front step. We rang the bell again and a middle-aged couple answered the door straight away. We said "sorry to bother you, but was this the house that was used for the film RS&B? They laughed and said yes, and proceeded to tell us that they were the owners when the film was made. They said that they received a visit from the films director who asked if they could use their house for a "Channel 4 comedy film" - as the house was a corner plot it would be ideal for filming.

They agreed and the scenes in the house were filmed during August 1985, and lasted just over a week. (So it was exactly 21 years since it was filmed!) Their furniture was moved to the garage so I'm afraid to say that the horrid pink sofa was not the owners! No indoor scenes were filmed in a studio as it would of proved too expensive. The windows were blacked out for the nighttime scenes. The owners didnt move out during shooting and confirmed that Michelle Holmes and Siobhan Finneran were just as giggly in real life as they were in the film. They said the novelty soon wore off when they had to do "take after take after take!"

They also said that people often drive round to spot their house but surprisingly we were the first people to knock on the door!!

In addition, the fat guy watering his lawn and the lady mowing her lawn at the start of the film were in fact extras, and not residents, as previously posted.

SCHOOL TRIP

This was filmed in Howarth, quite a sleepy quaint village just outside Bradford. Indoor scenes were filmed inside the Bronte Parsonage, home of the famous Bronte sisters, which is situated at the back of the village church.

BAILDON MOOR

Used for the outdoor scenes where Rita stands in cow-poo - we couldnt find exact location, but it could be the golf course thats now there.

BEACON PUB

This is in the Buttershaw area, and it looks as delightful as ever! The main entrance is now boarded up, and it no longer has georgian windows - its now plain glass.

SCHOOL

Rita and Sue playing tennis (with a very drunk Sylvia "aah teck no notice of 'er") was filmed at the the Buttershaw Specialist High School - the raised area where Bob catches the girls attention can clearly be seen. This is practially next door to the pub.

Cheers Nickij, I enjoyed reading what you wrote. I never knew the inside scenes were filmed in August 85! I cant believe the people who own the house are still the same owners. I bet it was like walking back into a timewarp lol, and didn't I tell you it was 5 Bramham Drive? I couldn't believe it when I just stumbled across it on google earth after years of wondering where the house was. So the fat guy watering his lawn doens't live there, I didn't think he did, as someone previously posted. Did you manage to get a nose around inside and did you manage to get some pics? If you did get pics could you e-mail them to me?

Brilliant!
I love the film and am from Bradford.
I'd have never thought to tour on my own doorstep!
Glad you had the guts to knock on the door and also that they were very welcoming!
When my cars mended I will find the famous No5 Brahmam Drive!
Did you find out if Ritas house was still there and if so did you see it?
I know a lot of the flats/houses on the Buttershaw estate have been knocked down to build new.
In the film it looks like Sues flats were in prep for demolition as the lower ones were boarded up.
Not something I noticed when I was young but as you age you look at background etc (especially after the 100th watching and the invention of DVD!)

If you send me your email address I will send some through.

I'm Glad you were excited to visit baildon and buttershaw. I'm not sure i would travel all that way to see it.

I come from the town that emmerdale calls "hotten". Not far from baildon. Its been in "the royal, heartbeat, at home with the braithwaites, fat friends, and the chase. The trouble is, no one comes to see it for the history -thomas chippendale was born there - they come to see it for Emmerdale! Guy fawkes descendents have lived in the town for centuries. The town is in the doomsday book. But, who cares as long as its on tv!!

Howarth is the birth place of the brontes. I would rather it was famous for that than for a film. Actually, it is more famous for the brontes!

The exact spot on Baildon Moor where the farmer needs to install a toilet is here:

You can just see a silver coloured farm gate right in the centre of the picture, breaking the stone wall which runs bottom-left to top-right across the map. The gate isn't there in the film, but Rita runs through it to the large brown patch just underneath it (on the map) which is where Bob & Sue jump out from behind the wall. Then they ask him if they're gonna 'You know...'.

The bit of Baildon Moor where Sue and Aslam later have a lie down is in the centre of this picture:

It's just slightly north-west of the crossroads you can see in the walking tracks.

Now will you stop asking me what you can and cannot do - just do it if you must.

Oh if I'd of known that when I went in the summmer!!
A very detailed posting!

Thanks! I viewed Bob's house on google Earth. Who designed a house where 3/4 of the front is a garage?

Heh - I'm watching this literally right now as I type this, on Channel 4 of course. Nice hearing about your conversation with the house owners.

I very rarely watch films but watched this Saturday night. Loved it! Made me very nostalgic. The music, the cars, the fashions... Fantastic!
