accents

This is one aimed at people who live locally. Are the accents in this film accurate for Buttershaw?

I'm from Ossett. One thing that I notice is that Bob and Sue's mum both sound more Ossettish than the other characters in the film.

reply

Ossett is more middle-class than Buttershaw (I don't live near either, but I have watched football matches in or near both.) and Bob is supposed to be middle-class (as he lives in a posh area) so that would fit, although Sue's mum would be a problem.

Butter shaw estate may come under bradford,, but its as near to the border with leeds as i am [a few miles].
Apperley bridge is the border with leeds. Thats down the road from me. Wibsey is nowhere near buttershaw.

My husband comes from bradford. He works in barnsley. They are poles apart. His mother is from wigan and some of the accents in that film sound more like wigan to me.
If they are indeed bradford, they have found actors with broad yorkshire accents to represent a "bradford" accent". In other words, my grandad spoke broad yorkshire with thee and thou. That's been watered down. Bradford people just speak different degrees of that original dialect, as do leeds.
Wakefield is the same. Barnsley is more true to the original yorkshire dialect.

The main actors are Lancastrian and use their own accents. The 'Bratfud' accent is quite different. I lived about 5 mins from Buttershaw for years, Im still not far away. Bratfud born and bred.

Buttershaw Estate is South West Bradford, the completely other side to where Leeds is, which is East of Bradford. It's not far from the border of Halifax. My brother lived in Hipperholme a couple of miles from Halifax and the Buttershaw estate is like 3 miles down the road from him.

Just lifted this from an article about the place.

The estate was built to house residents from the old back-to -back houses near Bradford centre which were being demolished.

The council couldn't wait to get rid of these unsightly slums and its people.
At the time Buttershaw was just rough moorland well out of the way of Bradford infact it was Almost in Halifax.
